Shiki is proud of his swordsmanship and expects his authority to be taken seriously. Ares’s initial refusal to study under him angers him, but Shiki persists because he believes Ares can become a great swordsman 25 26. He can be ruthless toward subordinates and enemies, yet repeatedly risks himself to protect his disciple 25 270.

He believes pirates should rule the sea, a view he voices while trying to recruit Roger to the Rocks Pirates 100 105.
