Background / History

Rocks formed the Rocks Pirates by defeating the crew’s early challengers, including young Whitebeard Newgate, Shiki the Golden Lion, and Captain John. His rule rests on this established superiority: the crew follows a principle in which the capable rise and the mediocre are eliminated. 206 243

As captain, Rocks sought more than plunder. During the raid on Alabara, he declared his desire for territory, ambitious subordinates, and ultimately the world itself. He considered the powerful pirates aboard his ship—Newgate, Shiki, Linlin, and others—not threats to exclude, but forces he was confident he could control. 1 24

Rocks recruited Ares after the boy challenged him immediately following his defeat of Kaido.
