Background and History

Whitebeard and the Golden Lion were once members of the Rocks Pirates. Unlike the Golden Lion, who sought power, Whitebeard wanted a family 105. He treated his crewmates as sons and regarded Oden Kozuki as family, though Oden eventually left his crew to help Roger reach the final island 65.

After the Great Pirate Era began, Whitebeard claimed Fish-Man Island as his territory, protecting it from pirates 81. As the Navy withdrew from parts of the New World, defeated pirates and crews seeking protection pledged allegiance to him. His influence grew despite his lack of interest in domination 105.

When Teach murdered Sachi and fled, Ace pursued him on behalf of the crew 191. Victor subsequently captured Ace and arranged his public execution to draw Whitebeard into a war with the Navy 195 196. Whitebeard led his fleet to Marineford to rescue him 201.

Personality

Whitebeard prioritizes his crew over territory or power. He generally advises them to avoid unnecessary clashes with the Navy, but refuses to abandon captured crewmates—even when Shanks warns him against attacking Marineford 21 198. In battle, his concern for Marco causes him to expose himself to a severe blow from Victor 205.

He respects formidable opponents. During their fight, he moves past his initial anger and acknowledges Victor's strength and speed 202.

Marineford War

Whitebeard arrives with fourteen division commanders and forty-two affiliated crews. He opens the battle with a tsunami, then fights Victor as his pirates advance toward Ace's execution platform 201. Although his blows devastate the battlefield, Victor's attacks and Whitebeard's own exertion steadily worsen his condition 203 205 206.

As the rescue fails, Whitebeard orders his crew to retreat, choosing to remain behind 211. He continues toward Ace despite bullets and blades, but Ace is executed before he can reach him. Whitebeard then delivers a final earthquake that cracks Marineford's fortress; Akainu kills him during the attack 212.
