Background

Golden Lion was formerly a member of the Rocks Pirates alongside Whitebeard. Unlike Whitebeard, whose priority was family, Golden Lion pursued power and world domination. He intended to make Roger his right-hand man and conquer the world with an Ancient Weapon. 22 46 105

As leader of the Flying Pirates, he commanded the largest force in the New World, with numerous ships stationed at Glosha Island. His crew was intensely loyal and inclined to share his dismissive view of the Navy. 22

After his initial capture, Golden Lion escaped Impel Down by sacrificing both legs. He recovered in hiding, using swords as replacement legs, then met Whitebeard to announce his intention to make Victor pay for his defeat. 105

He is also unpredictable and callous toward his followers. During his first battle with Victor, he created an enormous falling lion of earth and debris that threatened to sink the entire island, showing no concern for the Flying Pirates caught beneath it. 52

Despite his arrogance, Golden Lion possesses the instincts of an experienced veteran. When badly injured, he shifted to aerial combat to exploit his mobility advantage and attempted to wear Victor down rather than meet him directly. 53 He acknowledged Victor as a worthy opponent after initially underestimating him. 54 55

The Navy attacked Golden Lion’s New World base while his forces were weakened. Victor and Sakazuki divided the Flying Pirates’ leadership, with Victor facing Golden Lion directly. 49 50
