Background

Origins and legacy

The Uchiha and Senju fought each other throughout the Warring States Era, with their conflict described as lasting roughly a thousand years. Their later feud is traced to Indra and Asura, sons of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki; Jin states that the Uchiha Stone Tablet presents incomplete, altered information about this history 146 153.

According to Jin's interpretation, Senju Tobirama established the Konoha Military Police Force to isolate the Uchiha politically. The role placed them in constant conflict with civilians and other clans, while the village gradually stripped the force of intelligence, interrogation, and counterespionage authority, leaving it mainly responsible for unpopular public-security work 24.

Marginalization in Old Konoha

Following the Nine-Tails' Rampage, the clan was blamed despite a lack of proof, expelled from its central district, and confined to an isolated compound. Anbu and Root surveillance, disappearances, and political pressure deepened its resentment toward Konoha's leadership 33 101.

The clan fractured into Radical, Moderate, and Middle factions. Uchiha Jin became the Radical Faction's leader after awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan, while Fugaku remained the formal Clan Head 1 10. Jin's rise rested on the argument that submission would not protect the clan from Sarutobi Hiruzen's faction and that the Uchiha needed to build enough strength to resist it 26 27.

Restoration of the ancestral land

Jin forced Hiruzen to return the Uchiha ancestral compound in exchange for the clan resuming responsibility for village security. The Uchiha subsequently moved from the outskirts back to their original central district, despite civilian hostility and fear 20 33.

The restoration became a decisive political victory. Moderate and Middle Faction elders, including Tenno and Yashiro, abandoned Fugaku's policy of appeasement and publicly supported Jin's leadership 27 29. Jin was later granted Madara's former residence, while the elders treated him as the clan's practical leader despite Fugaku retaining the title of Clan Head 34.

Position in New Konohagakure

After the fall of Old Konoha's ruling faction, Jin established New Konohagakure and became its First Hokage. The Uchiha's former drive to control village institutions largely faded once they were no longer persecuted; many members resigned administrative posts in favor of missions, combat, and training 117 243.

Parallel-world massacre crisis

Jin sent Shisui through the Hongmeng Tower's unstable interworld passage to prevent the alternate world's Uchiha massacre. Rather than trying to immediately resolve the clan's political problems, Shisui was ordered to preserve the clan, seize control if necessary, and delay events until reinforcements could arrive 387.

Shisui organized a full evacuation beneath Naka Shrine, replaced civilians with Shadow Clones, and eliminated Root infiltrators before they could report the preparations. Itachi's attempted massacre failed when he discovered that the compound had already been emptied and prepared for war 392.

After Shisui persuaded Itachi to reject the extermination order, Itachi and Shisui killed the Root squad monitoring the clan. The Uchiha factions then united behind a plan to pressure the Sarutobi clan rather than submit to annihilation 397 398.

Shisui's subsequent defeat of Root and Fugaku's voluntary resignation secured his appointment as Clan Head. He demanded the return of the original Uchiha compound and threatened Konoha with total war if it attempted another extermination campaign 401 402.
