The grain stored in the granaries could be said to be important reserve supplies. Whenever some natural or man-made disaster occurred—for example, the wars in previous years—those reserves would come in handy, helping them weather the crisis with greater composure.
Conversely, if they had not had any grain stored in their granaries at the time, their
