Background / History

Su Yuan is Su Ming's father, Zhao Ning's husband, and Su Zhentian's youngest son. He was once Jiang Yu's student, though he neglected his studies and retained little of what he learned. His fear of Su Zhentian and lack of achievement contributed to his low standing in the Su Family and the family's exile to the Thirteenth District. 16 31 207

In the Thirteenth District, Su Yuan became the head of the Yuan Da garbage disposal plant. His management was criticized as negligent after a Chilami larva outbreak was traced to the junkyard; investigators detained him as the intended scapegoat for the disaster. Su Zhentian ultimately secured his release through Xiao Lie, after which Su Yuan returned home and exaggerated how easily he had handled the ordeal. 27 31 32

Despite his shortcomings, Su Yuan consistently supports Su Ming. He approves of Su Ming's ambition to excel in the City Exam, sends junkyard security guards to protect him from Wang Qiang's gang, and follows Su Ming's plan to keep the thugs detained until Zhang Tai can be arrested on the exam day. 4 41

After Su Ming enters Imperial Court Academy, Su Yuan remains uneasy about his son's growing independence and does not accompany him back to Starlight City. He later returns there with Zhao Ning to see Su Ming, though his phobia visibly resurfaces at the station. 90 95 357

Su Yuan joins Su Ming on an unauthorized expedition into Wormhole Space-time to help Shadell obtain a Star Spirit. The mission ends in punishment for both men, but Su Ming refuses to allow the tribunal to place the blame solely on Su Yuan. 366 370

Personality

Su Yuan is timid, easily intimidated, and particularly fearful of his father. Even when Jiang Yu arrives to investigate Su Ming's humiliation, Su Yuan is more worried about whether Su Zhentian has criticized him than about the investigation itself. 16

He often masks his insecurity with boasting, impulsiveness, and a flashy persona. After being released from detention, he claims he was never in danger; later, he appears at the Eye of the World with dyed yellow hair and a deliberately extravagant style. 32 366

Beneath this behavior, Su Yuan is a protective and affectionate father. He worries excessively over Su Ming going to school, celebrates his accomplishments, and readily acts when Su Ming is threatened. 5 41 85

His judgment can be poor in business and personal matters. He dismisses reports of missing junkyard workers while entertaining Jiang Yu, then later spends twenty billion Federal currency at a charity auction for the chance to dine with Siris. 16 378
