Background / History
The sect’s founders were originally low-level rogue cultivators with close personal ties. An expedition into ancient Cave Abode Ruins gave them the resources and inheritances to rise, recruit disciples, and establish Cloud Water Sect. Treasures retained from those ruins became its ultimate trump cards, allowing it to survive later calamities 1281.
Its decisive rise followed the upheaval caused by Huangtian Cult a thousand years earlier. The calamity destroyed Thick Earth Sect and severely damaged the Water Element Lineage descended from the Ancient Five Elements Sect. Invited by a senior Cloud Water Sect figure, the surviving Water Element Lineage joined the sect. This merger, together with Xuan Su’s attainment, helped Cloud Water Sect become Yuzhou’s new overlord 868 1268.
As its core territory became extensively developed by affiliated forces, the sect expanded into the South Sea. It dispatched Spirit Essence and True Essence disciples to occupy valuable islands, secure resources, protect settlements, and extend cultivation into new frontiers 230 409.
Organization
Disciple Hierarchy
| Stratum | Position and responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Menial disciples | Hold lower status than Outer Sect disciples within the sect 1. |
| Outer Sect disciples | Form the large recruitment and selection pool supplying the Inner Sect. Many undertake missions, garrison territories, or perform frontier service 124 244. |
| Inner Sect disciples | Receive substantially better inheritances and benefits. Outsiders recognize them as “immortal masters” and treat them with greater respect 2 7 124. |
| True/Core Disciples | Enter the sect’s core stratum, gaining greater protection and access to deeper cultivation knowledge and institutional secrets 282 387 521. |
| Peak Masters and Deputy Peak Masters | Lead the Inner Sect lineages and select eligible recruits after the Outer Sect Grand Competition 124. |
| Supreme ancestors | Provide the sect’s highest-level protection and determine its response to existential threats 1269 1317 1321. |
Inner Sect Lineages
- Eight Peaks — The Inner Sect has eight lineages, each founded upon a branch of the main Cloud Water Mountain Spirit Vein 124.
- Mystic Water Peak / Xuan Shui Peak — Zhang Qingyuan’s lineage, formerly led by Daoist Ming Shui. Its water-attribute inheritance favors providing resources and allowing disciples to develop independently 124 495.
- Tianmu Peak — Its Peak Master, Daoist Tongmu, helps Zhang Qingyuan enter the Divine Wood Secret Realm 1292.
- Separate teaching philosophies — The eight lineages do not all cultivate disciples in the same way 495.
Administrative Halls
| Institution | Function |
|---|---|
| External Affairs Hall | Provides missions through which disciples obtain cultivation resources 4 5. |
| Hidden Skills Pavilion | Stores cultivation methods, spells, and martial skills; techniques can be exchanged using Sect Contribution Points 2 71. |
| Law Enforcement Hall | Investigates threats, carries out armed enforcement, and maintains order at major gatherings 196 1262. |
| Artifact Refining Hall and Alchemy Hall | Their higher-ups seek access to Moon Connect Island’s production methods during the sect’s financial strain 1241. |
Recruitment and Disciple Training
Promotion and Service
- Triennial promotion competition — Outer Sect disciples can seek Inner Sect admission through the Grand Competition held every three years 2.
- Assessment deadline — Disciples who fail to enter the Inner Sect after three assessment opportunities or ten years lose their courtyard resources and instructional benefits, and are sent into territorial service or expansion 3.
- Supplementary admission challenges — A separate challenge route allows strong disciples eliminated through unfavorable competition matchups to contest additional Inner Sect places 108.
- Lineage selection — Peak Masters divide successful candidates among the eight Inner Sect lineages. Daoist Ming Shui selects Zhang Qingyuan for Mystic Water 124.
- Territorial assignments — Missions, appointments, and Contribution Points incentives distribute disciples across the sect’s holdings 244.
Teaching Philosophy
Cloud Water Sect treats itself as an inheritance-bearing collective rather than a family clan. It supplies guidance, techniques, and resources, but expects disciples to gain experience through independent cultivation and dangerous encounters. Greater achievement brings greater support, rather than unconditional protection from the outset 387.
- Ranking battles — Frequent contests develop competitive drive and practical combat experience 210.
- Branch headmasters — Inner Sect disciples can accept Outer Sect teaching appointments as Contribution Points missions. Headmaster Liu initially teaches the Seventeenth Branch once every three months 2.
- Teaching as cultivation — Zhang Qingyuan’s own headmaster service helps him examine his foundation and form bonds with younger disciples 621.
- Limits on intervention — Even for True Disciples, death in an ordinary treasure contest does not automatically trigger a special Law Enforcement Hall kill order. Deliberate ambushes and assassinations are treated differently 387.
- Grand competitions — The Inner Sect Grand Competition showcases the sect’s next generation to outside forces; one edition attracts over 200,000 spectators 483.
- Exceptional rewards — Hall of Enlightenment access is among the rewards sought by leading competition participants 562.
Territory and Resources
Territorial System
- Core holdings — The sect controls the lands supplied by the Cloud Water Mountain Spirit Vein, extending several thousand li around the mountain range 124 409.
- Estimated area — Zhang Qingyuan estimates its reserved territory at no less than thirty million square kilometers; this is his calculation, not a surveyed figure 409.
- Affiliated network — Subordinate families, lesser sects, and clans founded by former Outer Sect disciples extend its system beyond direct membership 409.
- Limited direct administration — Its supremacy does not make it a continent-wide government. It generally avoids remote regions unless they possess substantial value 409.
- Quiet headquarters — Valuable Spirit Lands near the headquarters remain under direct sect control, and overly prosperous cities are discouraged nearby to preserve conditions for secluded cultivation 198.
- Frontier cities — At the Monster Beast Mountain Range border, the sect establishes a cultivation city with at least one million inhabitants, including mortals 198.
Cultivation Sites
| Site | Resources and access |
|---|---|
| Cloud Water Mountain Spirit Vein | The sect’s principal territorial foundation. Inner Sect residences have spiritual energy at least comparable to Outer Sect courtyard Secret Chambers 124. |
| Profound Water Dark River | A private water-attribute resource beneath Mystic Water Peak, captured and regulated through sect formations 143 213. |
| Yin Feng Valley | A semi-public resource region guarded through Yin Feng City. Entry costs five Spirit Stones, with visitors responsible for their own gains and losses 143. |
| Water inheritance secret ground | Contains the True Meaning of Water and Water Momentum inheritance; access requires a large expenditure of Contribution Points 641. |
| Divine Wood Secret Realm | Houses an ancient being that has existed for over ten thousand years and offers opportunities sought by Core Disciples 748 1292. |
| Cave Heaven Secret Realm | Used by Zhang Qingyuan for secluded cultivation during preparations against the Abyssal Demon King 1318. |
Profound Water Dark River
- Three layers — Spirit Essence cultivators can enter the first, True Essence cultivators operate in the second, and the third is said to require Cave True cultivation 213.
- Protected cultivation zone — A formation covers a ten-mile radius beneath Mystic Water Peak, creating a relatively safe area 213.
- Resources — Its waters provide abundant Water Elemental Power, spirit materials, low-level demonic fish, and conditions for refining Essence of Gui Water 129 130 213.
- Exploration hazards — Rarer resources lie outside the protected zone, where underground water races and beasts pose greater danger. Breaches and abnormal beast aggression can also threaten normally safer areas 213 214.
Tribute and Protection
- Hu Family agreement — The family pays half its annual Spirit Field harvest to Cloud Water Sect in exchange for recognition of its Azure Mountain Town holdings and protection from outside powers 6.
- Separate service fees — Farming problems and other routine assistance require the family to fund posted missions; tribute does not cover those services 6.
- Resource selection — The sect declines to occupy Azure Mountain Town’s small Spirit Spring because its output does not justify maintaining a garrison 6.
Cultivation Inheritances
| Inheritance | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Water Essence Art / Water Origin Art | A common Outer Sect foundation method. Its fourth layer grants stronger water-associated properties and substantially greater Spirit Essence reserves 9 22. |
| Nine Refinements Bone Forging Fist | A widespread foundational fist art that tempers bones, blood, and physique; deeper mastery increases its offensive strength 19. |
| Cloud Water Thirteen Sword Styles | The sect’s most widely taught basic sword art. Designed to build sound fundamentals, with a high ceiling and an advanced Inner Sect successor art 19. |
| Manifestation Tracing Technique | An auxiliary art taught by Headmaster Liu, useful in wilderness exploration despite its limited offensive value 2 6. |
| Water Control Technique | An intermediate Inner Sect auxiliary spell that improves water and water-attribute Spirit Essence control, and can strengthen compatible martial skills 61 62. |
| One Origin Gui Water Scripture | An Inner Sect cultivation method capable of leading toward Cave True. Produces pure, deep, continuous Spirit Essence 128 134 142. |
| Supreme Annihilation Divine Heavenly Sword | Derived by Water Sword Immortal Qi Yiming from a bronze fragment preserved among the sect’s founding treasures 1291. |
- Outer Sect collection — The Hidden Skills Pavilion holds tens of thousands of low-level techniques, generally limited to Human Tier and below, while excluding the sect’s core inheritances 71.
- Founding treasures — Relics from the founders’ ancient ruins expedition serve as emergency trump cards 1281.
- Later additions — Zhang Qingyuan leaves some of his own inheritances in Cloud Water Sect after rebuilding Xuan Shui Sect 1348.
Internal Politics
Steadfast and Radical Factions
- Origin — The division begins among the higher-ups and spreads into the Inner Sect. Leaders permit it partly because it encourages competition 521.
- Hidden issues — The factions concern core sect secrets, not merely different public teaching philosophies 521.
- Renewed dispute — The Water Sword Immortal’s fall three hundred years earlier intensifies disagreements over disciple nurturing 868.
- Effect on Zhang Qingyuan — His conflict with Yuwen Shaohuan exposes factional interference, prompting him to distance himself from sect politics 551.
Water Element Lineage Dispute
The Water Element Lineage preserves an unusually independent inheritance within Cloud Water Sect. Its original merger reportedly included an agreement permitting eventual separation, but the details become uncertain after its leader dies and the sect’s Grand Elder enters prolonged seclusion 868 880.
Daoist Ming Shui wishes to restore Xuan Shui Sect outside Cloud Water Sect. Current leaders resist separation because it would divide cultivators, resources, and inheritances while creating a precedent for other senior members. Ming Shui steps down from Mystic Water Peak and attempts to establish a foundation in the South Sea, but never fulfills his goal 879 880 1348.
- Protection despite disagreement — Daoist Ming Xin confronts Lu Tianxu because Ming Shui’s disciples remain sect members until the lineage actually leaves 880.
- Limits of that protection — The sect is initially unwilling to extend the same effort to all of Zhang Qingyuan’s relatives, friends, and subordinate holdings 880.
- Later exception — Zhang Qingyuan successfully rebuilds Xuan Shui Sect while remaining Cloud Water Sect’s Supreme Old Ancestor; his authority removes the opposition faced by Ming Shui 1348.
Moon Connect Island Asset Dispute
- Acquisition proposal — Artifact Refining Hall and Alchemy Hall higher-ups seek the island’s valuable production techniques to strengthen the sect and relieve Mo Calamity expenditures 1241.
- Internal opposition — Other leaders fear that confiscation would establish a precedent for seizing disciples’ property 1241.
- Outside exploitation — North Profound Gate attempts to use these disagreements to secure control of the island 1241 1250.
Major Conflicts and Reconstruction
| Event | Sect involvement |
|---|---|
| Earlier Vast Sea Sect war | A war three hundred years earlier ends in an East Sea ceasefire, but lethal border clashes continue for centuries 230. |
| Destruction of Spirit Sea Sword Sect | Cloud Water Sect destroys the sect after its involvement with Vast Sea Sect. A Cloud Water elder kills its Cave True Grand Elder; the defeated Sect Master sinks the remaining island and holdings into the abyss 313 333. |
| Renewed war with Vast Sea Sect | Attacks target Cloud Water Sect’s outstanding young generation, including its Outer Sect Ten Prodigies. The wider war draws subordinate forces into combat 286 291. |
| Retaliation after attacks on Zhang Qingyuan’s family | Law Enforcement elites kill participants in the siege and overturn several lawless regions; Golden Extremity Sect also suffers losses 891. |
| Joint Abyssal Demon Source expedition | Zhang Qingyuan, Dan Yang, and Xuan Su cooperate with Golden Extremity Sect and North Cold Palace, despite distrust between the parties 1269 1271. |
| Failed Dao Alliance campaign | Dan Yang and Xuan Su assist the alliance, but its crushing defeat leaves Cloud Water Sect among Yuzhou’s last viable centers of resistance 1316 1317. |
| Relocation reversed | The sect first prepares to flee to spiritually barren wilderness, then cancels evacuation and concentrates its forces to buy time for Zhang Qingyuan’s cultivation 1317 1318. |
| Last refuge in Yuzhou | Its hundred-thousand-mile defensive line shelters surviving cultivators from many displaced factions. The Abyssal Demon King orders a full invasion 1323 1324. |
| Post-calamity recovery | Defensive spending nearly empties the treasury. The sect takes the largest share of newly available lands and Spirit Veins, then restores fields, formations, buildings, and damaged mountains 1335 1337. |
| Xuan Shui Sect reestablishment | Experienced Cloud Water disciples help establish the restored sect on the Moon Liên Islands 1347. |
