Xiao Zhan leads the Xiao Family in Wutan City and presides over its annual cultivation tests. He takes pride in all of his sons, especially after Xiao Lang reveals himself as a One-star Dou Practitioner, declaring that none of his children are worthless 3 4.

He consistently backs Xiao Lang despite the boy's debts, reckless conduct, and unpredictable cultivation. He supports Xiao Lang's challenge against Xiao Long and Xiao Hu, refuses to force him into the Misty Cloud Sect, and lends him substantial funds for alchemy materials even after prior borrowing disputes 4 7 8 12.

When the Misty Cloud Sect seeks to dissolve Xiao Yan's engagement to Nalan Yanran, Xiao Zhan nearly confronts Ge Ye with the Xiao Family's Raging Lion's Wrath before the elders restrain him. He ultimately addresses Nalan Yanran coldly as “Patriarch Xiao,” no longer accepting her as a niece 30.

As Xiao Lang's strength and reputation grow, Xiao Zhan becomes increasingly protective. Xiao Zhan is fiercely proud of his sons and quick to protect them, even when their actions create trouble for the family. He values keeping Xiao Lang close over the opportunities offered by the Misty Cloud Sect, and he secretly arranges protection when he believes his son may be in danger 7 43.
