Because large flagship-class vessels often served as fleet command centers, an invasion of the flagship could throw an entire fleet into disarray. That gave the Thunderbolt Fighter squadrons a chance to launch a surprise attack, press their advantage, and destroy swathes of Annihilation Warships.
Although the Defense Fleet was at an overwhelming numerical disadvantage, its close coordination allowed it to retain the initiative throughout the battle. In just three hours after the fighting began, it had destroyed more than 800,000 Annihilation Warships.
But during that time, the Annihilation Fleet had also drawn close to the fortresses and planets. The defenders' strategic room to maneuver had shrunk, and they soon found themselves locked in a bitter struggle.
Just then, the Phase Warp Devices aboard the Mobile Fortresses finally activated, and reinforcements from nearby star systems arrived at last.
Waves of fighters and Assault Ships charged toward the Annihilation Fleet. The NPC Fleet was immediately engulfed by a vast swarm of enemy warships.
Like a school of sharks devouring a whale, the fleet was attacked from all sides. Frigates were destroyed in droves, and the dense anti-aircraft screen was torn apart. Thunderbolt Fighters and Assault Ships patrolling nearby swarmed in. The former cleared out small and medium-sized warships, while the latter specialized in dealing with
large and giant warships. They had clearly defined roles and worked together seamlessly.
With reinforcements from nearby Fortress Star Systems, the defenders' situation improved considerably, and the two sides became locked in a stalemate.
"The reinforcements from the surrounding Fortress Star Systems are taking too long," Lin Zhichen commented as he watched the battle.
"Can't be helped. It's difficult to lock onto a destination with a Phase Warp Device. If we use a stargate, we still have to cross a vast stretch of space, which takes even
