Background

Tang San is the son of Tang Hao and Ah Yin. He initially did not know that Ah Yin was a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast; the revelation leaves him devastated and makes him question his own mixed heritage 47 48.

He is tied to the Clear Sky Sect through Tang Hao. When Martial Soul Hall publicly removes the sect from the continent, Tang San suffers a violent backlash: his Mysterious Heaven Skill soul power runs out of control, he vomits blood, and he collapses while fearing for his father 36.

Tang San is closely attached to Yu Xiaogang, whom he regards as the mentor who led him onto the path of a soul master. Even after Yu Xiaogang's reputation is damaged, Tang San continues to view him as a vital emotional support 51.

Appearance

Tang San has black hair and clear blue eyes; prolonged grief, injury, and captivity leave him pale, bloodshot-eyed, gaunt, and frequently stained with blood or dust 51 58 73.

  • During his journey to Sea God Island, he is described with slightly disheveled black hair and a sorrowful expression 63.
  • In captivity, he wears tattered clothing and heavy soul-power-suppressing shackles 73.
  • At the Bronze Sparrow Platform banquet, he is given clean clothing but remains bound in shackles 96.

Personality

Tang San is fiercely protective of the people he loves. When Xiao Wu is exposed as a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soft Bone Rabbit, he immediately tries to shield her with Blue Silver Grass despite the danger surrounding them 48 49. He later keeps her close during Ye Xian's assault on Sea God Island, using his own body and circulating soul power in a futile attempt to protect her from the cold 66.

Repeated losses push him toward hatred and desperation, particularly after the destruction of the Clear Sky Sect, Tang Hao's death, and Yu Xiaogang's capture 36 51 61. Nevertheless, he retains a survival-oriented resolve. While imprisoned, he urges his companions to endure rather than throw their lives away, treating survival as the foundation for eventual revenge 101.

Tang San is observant and restrained under pressure. During forced labor, he silently studies guard rotations and Martial Soul Hall's layout while conserving as much strength as possible 73.

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San can manifest both Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer.

  • Uses Blue Silver Grass defensively, attempting to bind and shield Xiao Wu during Yue Guan's attack 49.
  • Manifests Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer simultaneously during the defense of Sea God Island 68.
  • His martial abilities become difficult or impossible to use while restrained by the special shackles imposed by Martial Soul Hall 73.

Mysterious Heaven Skill

Tang San cultivates the Mysterious Heaven Skill, which governs his soul power circulation.

  • Its loss of control causes severe internal injury when he learns of the Clear Sky Sect's destruction and later sees the wanted notice against himself and Tang Hao 36 39.
  • He circulates it at full force to resist Ye Xian's extreme cold while holding Xiao Wu, but the effort is insufficient against the Emperor's domain 66.
  • Even after his cultivation is sealed, his physique remains stronger than that of several fellow laborers 73.

Eight Spider Lances

Tang San can deploy Eight Spider Lances from his back.

  • He instinctively manifests them while attempting to protect Xiao Wu from capture 49.
  • On Sea God Island, the lances absorb ambient energy while he cultivates by the shore 65.
  • The island's environment gradually cleanses some of the malevolent aura associated with the lances 65.

Purple Demon Eye and Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon

Tang San employs perception and force-control techniques during captivity.

  • Uses the Purple Demon Eye to track guard shift patterns and observe Martial Soul Hall's internal layout 73.
  • Applies Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon to manage his exertion and preserve strength while hauling materials 73.

Hidden-Weapon Crafting

Tang San commissions hidden weapons from a blacksmith in Heaven Dou City shortly before learning of the Clear Sky Sect's destruction 36.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father. Their reunion after the sect's fall is brief and painful; Tang Hao asks Tang San to live and train hard before leaving to pursue revenge. Tang Hao is later killed by Ye Xian 38 61.
  • Ah Yin — Mother. A Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast who sacrificed herself to save Tang Hao and their child; Tang San learns this truth only later 47 48.
  • Xiao Wu — Lover and closest source of comfort. Tang San repeatedly tries to protect her after her soul-beast identity is exposed, and the two support each other during their flight toward Sea God Island 49 51 63.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and spiritual pillar. Tang San is driven into fury when Ye Xian abducts him; they are later both held under Martial Soul Hall's control 36 51 73.
  • Tang Chen — Clear Sky Sect ancestor. Tang Chen arranges Tang San's evacuation to Sea God Island and secures the group's right to remain there before being killed by Ye Xian 55 65 84.
  • Tang Xun — Fourth Elder of the Clear Sky Sect. Escorts Tang San and the Shrek Seven Devils toward Sea God Island and pledges to protect him 55 58 63.
  • Dai Mubai, Zhu Zhuqing, Oscar, Ma Hongjun, and Ning Rongrong — Fellow Shrek Seven Devils. Tang San trains, flees, fights, and endures captivity alongside them 55 68 101.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Fall of the Clear Sky Sect

The Papal Edict declaring the Clear Sky Sect removed from the continent shatters Tang San emotionally and physically. He fears for Tang Hao, returns to Shrek Academy in panic, and collapses after the news is confirmed 36.

Martial Soul Hall subsequently brands Tang San and Tang Hao as wanted remnants of the Clear Sky Sect, offering soul bones and gold for their capture 38 39.

Revelations at Soul Severing Slope

Ye Xian exposes Ah Yin's soul-beast identity and then identifies Xiao Wu as a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soft Bone Rabbit. Tang San is horrified by the truth about his mother but still chooses to protect Xiao Wu when she becomes a target 47 48 49.

After Tang Chen interrupts Ye Xian's attempted capture, Ye Xian abducts Yu Xiaogang through a space rift. Tang San attempts to pursue him in rage and must be restrained by his companions 51 52.

Journey to Sea God Island

Tang Chen orders Tang San and the Shrek Seven Devils to leave for Sea God Island under Tang Xun's protection, identifying Tang San's twin martial souls and potential as a remaining hope for the Clear Sky Sect 55.

Although Sea God Island initially rejects the group, Tang Chen's intervention persuades Bo Saixi to let them stay and train. Tang San cultivates the Purple Demon Eye and Mysterious Heaven Skill by the sea, but this respite lasts only three days before Ye Xian attacks the island 64 65 66.

Capture and Imprisonment

Tang San makes a final stand with both martial souls and the Eight Spider Lances during the assault on Sea God Island. He and the Shrek Seven Devils are overwhelmed and captured by the Six Great Enshrined Elders 68 69.

In Martial Soul City, he is imprisoned under reinforced restrictions. Ye Xian then forces him and several companions to build the seven-story Bronze Sparrow Platform as slave laborers 70 73.

Bronze Sparrow Platform Captivity

While hauling stone, timber, and metal in soul-power-suppressing shackles, Tang San covertly maps guard patterns and the city layout rather than openly resist 73.

At the completed platform's victory banquet, he is forced to serve the victors and helplessly witnesses Xiao Wu's public humiliation. The strain causes him to vomit blood and lose consciousness 96 98.

Even after further imprisonment and the collapse of the forces that might have saved him, Tang San insists that survival remains the condition for hope and eventual vengeance 101.
