Background / History

Juan'er was originally a ghost subdued and sealed by the Shen Family as a ghost array shadow puppet. Her recorded composition describes a being created through worship of an Evil God, the Ghost Qi of Li Manor, a Bagua formation, and gestation in a womb. Shen Yujun later bound her to Li Manor by carving its formation diagram onto the back of her head. 102 109

As Li Manor's formation eye, Juan'er was the hub of its Ghost Qi array. She could operate the manor's formations, perceive events throughout the estate, and appear anywhere within it; while she remained inside Li Manor, the formation eye could not be killed. Her fixation on Shadow Play was not merely a hobby—keeping her focused on puppetry prevented her from losing control. 102 103

During the Li Manor incident, Juan'er remained in her room repairing damaged puppets while Shen Yujun fled and her perceived family was destroyed. Chen Mo discovered the formation diagram on her head, used her knowledge of the manor to escape its ghost walls, and ultimately carried her out after knocking her unconscious. He also took her broken puppets and tools with him. 102 103 104

Elder Tang removed the Li Manor diagram, severing Juan'er's role as that estate's array core. He then bound her to Chen Mo using his Ghost Blood and a talisman, erased her memories of Li Manor, and implanted basic rules and knowledge. Upon awakening, she recognized Chen Mo as “Brother Mo” and resumed repairing puppets. 109

Juan'er appears as a young girl with a physical, human-like body, though she is a ghost formation puppet. She applies makeup for Shadow Play work and has been seen wearing embroidered shoes and a red padded jacket. 98 103 132

Personality

Juan'er is meticulous, patient, and intensely devoted to Shadow Play. She continued crafting puppets after her lamp oil ran out, working in complete darkness with no apparent difficulty. When Chen Mo demanded that she leave Li Manor, she refused to abandon damaged puppets even under threat from his Guan Dao. 98 102

After being remade, she became noticeably brighter and more cheerful, while remaining deeply obedient to Chen Mo. She calls him “Brother Mo” or “Young Master,” follows his orders, and takes pride in receiving his praise. 109 132

Her loyalty can become possessive. She became heartbroken and jealous when she believed Xiao Xiao would replace her, fearing that Chen Mo no longer needed her. 198
