Background / History
Nangong Ye serves as the Chief of the Great Gan Demon Suppression Division and resides at Nantian Tower in the capital. Her position is sufficiently elevated that even officials address her as “Esteemed Seat,” while her subordinates treat her with near-religious deference 125 213.
She became concerned with Dayin Mountain long before meeting Chen Mo. She knew that Emperor Tianbao’s attempt to tunnel through the mountain led to a Ghost Curse and the subsequent decline of Great Gan. To investigate related threats, she implanted part of her soul into a pawn; that pawn was later consumed by Chen Mo after becoming a Zombie, prompting Nangong Ye to travel personally to Honghe County 128.
After tracing the aftermath of the battle in Hegang, Nangong Ye pursued Chen Mo and Lu Chengzhuang. Chen Mo initially refused to travel with the unfamiliar purple-clad woman, unable to discern anything about her through his Golden Finger 129. She later operated under the name Xiao Ye while working alongside him.
Her first exploration of Dayin Mountain with Chen Kun ended after she resisted the tea pavilion’s ghost story at the cost of sixty years of cultivation; her hair turned completely white. She concluded that Jiang Hongyue’s awakening would bring chaos and that a Dragon Transformation practitioner was necessary to address Dayin Mountain 161.
Nangong Ye reunited with Chen Mo when he prepared for the Human-Dragon Sacrifice. Before the ritual, she revealed her true name to him and accepted responsibility for protecting his family and companions should he die 169. When Chen Mo fell unconscious following the Shamanic Dance, she took charge of his affairs, informed the Chen family, assigned Chen Kun to guard them, and carried Chen Mo herself to Dayin Mountain 169.
Within Dayin Mountain, Nangong Ye and Chen Mo infiltrated Red Village, uncovered Zhao Gu’s creation of the villagers from his own flesh and blood, survived an assault by more than a hundred thousand zombies, and entered the ancient tomb connected to Jiang Hongyue and the Human-Dragon Sacrifice 170 172 176. Their shared danger turned their partnership into a close personal bond.
Afterward, Nangong Ye returned to the capital but arranged for Chen Kun to relocate and protect the Chen family there 185. She later offered Chen Mo external membership in the Demon Suppression Division, allowing him to enter the capital and earn official rewards for eliminating the Moon Worship Cult 207.
Her identity as the Chief of the Great Gan Demon Suppression Division became openly known to Chen Mo during the investigation of Duke Wei’s household and the Moon Worship Cult 213. She subsequently admitted her feelings for Chen Mo and promised to protect him even if he became a danger to others 217.
Nangong Ye is ultimately revealed to be a clone created by Bai Yujing. The two possess considerable independence and cannot share memories or experiences in real time 227.
Appearance
Nangong Ye is a tall, exceptionally beautiful woman who usually dresses in purple and carries herself with a composed, distant nobility.
- Wears a fitted purple inner dress beneath a wide purple robe, cloud-patterned boots, and a purple oil-paper umbrella when traveling 128.
- A silver bell ball hangs at her neck 128.
- Her presence is refined and serene, even when facing supernatural dangers 143 177.
- Her hair turned completely white after she sacrificed sixty years of cultivation to resist Dayin Mountain’s ghost-story erosion 161.
- When dressing informally in Honghe County, she wore a light-purple waist-cinching ruqun with a dark-purple skirt and embroidered shoes 177.
Personality
Nangong Ye is quiet, restrained, and dislikes unnecessary conversation. Chen Kun notes that she dislikes talkative subordinates, while her own conduct shows a preference for direct action over extended explanation 143.
Despite her aloof manner, she is deeply responsible. She orders protection for Honghe County’s survivors, personally investigates disasters connected to Dayin Mountain, and takes responsibility for Chen Mo’s family after his collapse 128 169. She is also pragmatic: when crossing a bridge for ghosts, she tells Chen Kun to simply stop considering himself human 143.
Her time with Chen Mo reveals a warmer and more humorous side. She accepts the name “Xiao Ye” from him because she prefers his familiar manner of address to the fearful formality used by others 207. Her feelings for him eventually overcome her former belief that she must eradicate all demons and evil spirits 218.
