History
At the beginning of creation, the Primordial Continent was a perilous “dark forest” inhabited by remnants of Chaos Divine Beasts, Primordial Fierce Beasts, and other powerful exotic beings. The Qilin, Dragon, and Phoenix clans were regarded as its strongest early races. Even Hongjun, Luohu, the Three Pure Ones, and the Wu Clan did not readily confront them. 42
The continent suffered cumulative damage across several major conflicts:
| Event | Damage to the Primordial Continent |
|---|---|
| Dao-Demon Conflict | Demon Ancestor Luohu detonated the Western land veins, beginning the continent’s true decline. 249 |
| Witch-Demon Calamity | Buzhou Mountain collapsed, further lowering the world’s status. 249 |
| Investiture of the Gods Calamity | The battle between Sect Master Tongtian and the Four Saints shattered the continent; its spiritual energy became markedly thinner afterward. 249 |
Following these disasters, the Primordial Continent became a comparatively lesser world among the myriad worlds. 249
Cosmology
Three Realms and Dao Forces
The Primordial Continent encompasses the Three Realms and is governed through the interaction of the Heavenly Dao, Earthly Dao, and Human Dao. For a more complete advancement into a supreme Primordial Era World, all three Dao forces must reach Grand Perfection. 120
- Heavenly Dao — Its will is entwined with Dao Ancestor Hongjun, who has devoured it; killing him recklessly could destroy the Heavenly Dao together with him. 242
- Earthly Dao — Closely associated with Saint Houtu and the Netherworld. 65 120
- Human Dao — Its liberation from Heavenly Dao restraints is tied to the resurgence of the Human Race and the return of the Human Emperor. 120 393
Netherworld
Saint Houtu states that the Netherworld is at least as vast as the Primordial Continent before its shattering, and that it did not suffer the same destruction. Even Houtu claims to understand less than one-thousandth of it. 356
Perfect World Origin
Black Gold Tathagata identifies the Primordial Continent as a world evolved from a Seed of the Perfect World, referring to it as the ninth such Seed. The Shangyang Realm’s inhabitants, however, consider its evolution incomplete and flawed rather than truly “perfect.” 367 371 301
Hongjun’s Influence
After preaching at Zixiao Palace, Dao Ancestor Hongjun made the powerful beings of the Three Realms into his disciples under the Xuanmen, placing himself in the position of sole patriarch of the Primordial Continent. 44
He established six Saint positions, ensuring that aspiring cultivators had to seek Sainthood through positions he alone could grant. This gave him control over the life, death, and advancement of many of the continent’s strongest beings. 44
Zhang Yifan attributes several great calamities—the Witch-Demon Calamity, Investiture of the Gods Calamity, and Journey to the West Tribulation—to Hongjun’s ability to invoke the Heavenly Dao Tribulation as justification for suppressing rivals and emerging forces. 44
World Status Advancement
The Primordial Continent’s advancement is a central objective of the Heavenly Court and Zhang Yifan’s allies.
| Requirement / Factor | Significance |
|---|---|
| Return of Pangu’s primordial spirit | The Three Pure Ones must unite to enable the return of Pangu’s primordial spirit; Pangu’s physical body cannot reincarnate. 17 |
| Completion of the Three Dao | The Heavenly Dao, Earthly Dao, and Human Dao must reach Grand Perfection for a more complete advancement. 120 |
| Defeat of Hongjun | Killing Dao Ancestor Hongjun is identified as one condition for advancement, though his fusion with the Heavenly Dao makes this extremely dangerous. 29 242 |
| Protection of the world | Saint-level and Primordial Chaos Grand Unity Golden Immortal-level combat is forbidden on the continent for one thousand years, under penalty of death, due to its fragility. 249 |
| Unification and growth of the mortal realm | The rise of the Human Dao and a stronger mortal realm are treated as necessary parts of the continent’s future development. 369 393 |
If successfully elevated into a high-level supreme Primordial Era World, the Heavenly Emperor is expected to become the Lord of the Great Dao and command 108 Great Dao Saints. 3
The advancement has not yet been completed. Zhang Yifan later accelerates preparations after learning of the Shangyang Realm, while estimating that advancement is imminent within roughly twenty to thirty years. 301 369
