Background
Filon belonged to a late Iron Warriors intake known as the “Unnecessary Sons.” The batch was created after the Battle of Terra and the Iron Cage, using loyalist gene-seed stocks while the Legion withdrew toward the Eye of Terror. Veterans regarded the recruits as unnecessary, and Filon—visibly unlike many of his peers—was especially ostracized. He was derisively called “Unhappy Filon.” 10
He responded by devoting himself to machinery and forging, becoming a Tech Sergeant and eventually a Voidsmith. His fortunes changed when he met Sergeant Peter, who repeatedly taught recruits equipment maintenance rather than treating them as expendable tools. Filon became the first warrior to volunteer when Peter formed his own warband. Within the Forged Steel Brethren, he embraced the name “Happy Filon” and valued the brotherhood absent from the Iron Warriors. 10
After the warband claimed Limnos III, Filon managed its severely depleted armory, surveyed the world for construction and mining, and helped plan the Fortress Monastery. Peter trusted him to remain behind with Wonaby’s squad while he departed to obtain gene-seed. 2 10 26
His technical responsibilities expanded with the Chapter’s industry. He established a Bolter production line aboard the Blackrock, attempted to manufacture MK6 Raven-pattern Power Armour, trained apprentices, and later rose from Master Smith to Forge Master. 43 137 212
Appearance
Filon is a bald, coal-black-skinned Astartes with blood-red eyes. His appearance, particularly after becoming Forge Master, is further marked by Mechanicus-style augmentations and red armour. 2 212 352
- Originally wore silver-gray Power Armour, with metallic tentacles extending from his power pack to mark him as a Voidsmith. 2
- Usually keeps his bald head uncovered only in private or when necessary; he often wears his helmet in public after adopting red Forge Master armour. 10 212
- Later possessed a prosthetic left leg, prosthetic right arm, and mechanical optical implants in place of his eyes. 352
- Has operated in Indomitus-pattern Terminator Armour during boarding actions. 229
Personality
Filon is notably informal, outspoken, and humorous among the otherwise dour Forged Steel Brethren. He jokes during briefings, complains openly to Peter, and often provides unwanted commentary in tense situations. Peter tolerates this behaviour because Filon brings levity to the warband and remains dependable when work or battle demands it. 3 10 46
Behind his relaxed manner is a strong attachment to Peter and the Chapter. Having experienced the Iron Warriors’ distrust and internal culling, Filon considers the Forged Steel Brethren genuine brothers rather than tools. He accepts heavy responsibilities without hesitation when Peter entrusts him with them. 10 42
He takes evident pride in engineering, maintenance, and weapon development. His enthusiasm can become blunt practicality: he tempers Peter’s ambitions with industrial realities, warns plainly about dangerous technology, and reacts angrily when pilots repeatedly return aircraft in poor condition. 212 289 352
Abilities & Skills
Voidsmith Engineering
Filon is an accomplished technical specialist capable of maintaining Astartes equipment, interfacing with unfamiliar systems, and supervising armoury work.
- Assessed the warband’s weapons, vehicles, ammunition, and maintenance shortages after arriving at Limnos III. 2
- Established a Bolter production line and began producing MK6 Raven-pattern Power Armour with limited resources. 43
- Connected the Forged Steel Brethren’s communications to an Ork warship’s incomprehensible system, allowing Peter to bait the Ork Boss. 83
- Opened sealed electronic doors by linking a mechanical tentacle to their control components. 111
- Operated the daemon-bound systems of the Ark of Omen, including its neuro-steel plexus and turret controls. 378
Forge Mastery and Weapons Development
As Master Smith and later Forge Master, Filon manages repairs, trains technical personnel, and evaluates or develops advanced weapons.
- Assigned armour, weapon, shuttlecraft, and gunship maintenance to his apprentice Iliya and other technical personnel. 137
- Investigated the unusual properties of Peter’s Power Axe, Blood of Crassus. 137
- Evaluated STC fragments and identified templates for the Broadsword Servitor and Ranger Knight. 289
- Co-developed the Chapter’s prototype Disintegration Weapons with Daedalus and oversaw the initial production of 32 rifle and pistol variants. 352
- Warned that a malfunctioning Disintegration Weapon can reverse its beam onto the user, reducing them to atoms without warning or possibility of rescue. 352
Astartes Combat
Filon combines technical equipment with aggressive close-quarters fighting.
- Uses a Power Hammer as his primary melee weapon, crushing Orks, Gene-stealers, cultists, and Chaos Space Marines. 83 113 229 311
- Carries a Flamer Pistol or Flamer for close-range clearance, particularly effective against clustered Gene-stealers and daemons. 62 113 123
- Employs power-pack tentacles for battlefield utility; some can discharge plasma at nearby enemies. 240 310
- Uses Jump Pack mobility for direct assaults, once dropping onto and killing a PDF platoon leader from above. 62
- Performed breaching duties in the confined corridors of an Eldar vessel merged with a human ship. 118
Enhanced Senses
Like other Astartes, Filon possesses surgically enhanced sensory organs.
- His “Leman’s Ears” let him hear distant combat, filter battlefield noise, and retain balance in extreme motion. 19
- His augmented vision allowed him and Peter to track the trajectory of an artillery shell in flight. 77
Equipment
- Power Hammer — Filon’s regular close-combat weapon; often used with its Disintegration Field active. 19 123
- Flamer Pistol / Flamer — Used for corridor clearing and against massed infantry or xenos. 19 113
- Mechanical power-pack tentacles — Used to interface with machinery and, in combat, to deploy plasma fire. 2 240
- Augur Array — Used during surveys and to locate settlements or hostile forces. 19 81
- Terminator Armour — Used in Ork, space hulk, and boarding operations. 81 113 229
- Red Forge Master Power Armour — Worn after his transition from Voidsmith to Forge Master, despite his dislike of its association with Mars. 212
Relationships
- Peter — Warband leader and trusted “boss.” Filon joined Peter’s warband voluntarily, serves as his principal technical adviser, and remains loyal enough to undertake a final sacrifice for Peter’s mission. 10 47 407
- Iliya — Apprentice and Tech-Guard under Filon’s supervision. Filon assigns him extensive maintenance work and later fights alongside him during boarding actions. 137 238 240
- Anthony — Fellow veteran and frequent mission companion. Filon activated a Power Sword for Anthony and later helped carry the poisoned Peter to safety alongside him. 102 124
- Wonaby — Fellow captain entrusted with Limnos III’s defense while Filon managed the world’s technical development; Wonaby later ordered Filon to evacuate Peter during Zarakarniel’s attack. 10 124
- Gorgias — Junior warrior whom Filon trusted with his private Bloodwine-making method. 109
- Valentino — Chapter pilot frequently reprimanded by Filon for returning aircraft with excessive damage. 212
Story Role / Major Arcs
Founding of Limnos III
Filon supported Peter’s choice of Limnos III as the Forged Steel Brethren’s homeworld, correctly identifying the Maelstrom’s greater opportunities for plunder and resources. He then reported the warband’s dire equipment shortages and began planning how to equip future recruits despite the lack of gene-seed, an Apothecary, and manufacturing capacity. 2
While Peter and Anthony sought gene-seed, Filon remained on Limnos III to guard the homeworld, survey its continents and resources, and oversee construction. His reconnaissance on the Second Continent uncovered Khorne cultists operating on the planet. 10 19
Black Crusade and Industrial Expansion
Filon accompanied Peter to Black Legion territory, where he helped select durable, maintainable second-hand equipment from Valicar Hane’s armoury. 46 47
After the warband’s return, he inspected Limnos III’s first locally manufactured artillery pieces and aided the Chapter’s continuing military-industrial growth. 77
Ork Campaigns and Space Hulk Expeditions
Filon fought in Terminator Armour during the campaign against Orks, interfacing with their communications systems, killing a Mekboy with his Power Hammer, and helping Peter hold a narrow position against an Ork horde. 81 83
During the exploration of the space hulk Traitor King’s Cage, he fought Gene-stealers with flamer and hammer, breached an Eldar Spirit Bone door, and helped evacuate Peter after Zarakarniel poisoned him. 113 118 124
Forge Master and Chapter Defender
As Forge Master, Filon directed maintenance aboard the Blade of Judgment and personally joined its defense against boarding Chaos Space Marines. He and Iliya struggled against the Sons of the Emperor, but Filon intervened to prevent Ferdinand Yang from killing the wounded Randolph. 212 238 240 241
He later examined recovered STC fragments, identified the potential for Knight-Servitors and Knight-Mechs, and developed the Chapter’s dangerous Disintegration Weapon prototypes. 289 352
Battle of Medrengard
During the assault on Medrengard, Filon remained composed while reporting damage to the Olympia under Iron Warriors bombardment. 404
When the Chapter prepared to descend to Medrengard’s surface, Filon refused Peter’s order to evacuate. He stayed aboard the Ark of Omen to operate its weapons, delay enemy fleets, and ultimately crash the vessel into the planet as a final strike against the Fortress of Hate. 407
Trivia
- Filon is credited with making a distinctive “Bloodwine” mixture and taught the method only to Gorgias; its ingredients included methanol and ethylene glycol, both noted as toxic to ordinary humans. 109
- He considers himself poorly suited to the red Power Armour expected of a Forge Master, complaining that he had never even been to Mars. 212
- His final stated objective aboard the Ark of Omen was to give Perturabo “a surprise” by crashing the vessel into Medrengard. 407
