Background / History

During the early years of Horus's Great Heresy, Word Bearers and their cultist allies fled into the Maelstrom and established a base on the Daemon World Ghalmek. The world later became a Word Bearers stronghold governed by a Dark Council, which selected one of its Dark Apostles to rule it. 162

By the time of Herbert's capture, Ghalmek contained more than 5,000 Word Bearers, most of them recent recruits. The Legion abducted boys of suitable age from other worlds, subjected them to brutal modification and indoctrination, then sent the survivors into the Eye of Terror to replenish its ranks. 162

Erebus, formerly the Legion's chief Chaplain and second-in-command to Lorgar Aurelian, ruled Ghalmek as its current Dark Apostle. He had previously commanded major campaigns including the Calth incident. 162

Grey Knights investigating the Traitor King's Cage found evidence that Astartes had fought Daemons near a broken seal. Grand Master Seraphis Valerius considered Word Bearers from Ghalmek a possible culprit. 135

Appearance

Word Bearers are commonly identified by red Power Armour, Chaos eight-pointed stars, and blasphemous inscriptions directed against the Emperor. 177 255

Limnos III Incursion

Herbert travelled from Ghalmek to corrupt Limnos III under a pact with the Tzeentch Greater Daemon Altarius Lau Kras. Alexios and Gorgias broke his shield, crippled and captured him, and the Forged Steel Brethren imprisoned him in an anti-Psykana cell. 162

Assault on the *Eternal Vigil*

A Word Bearers fleet surrounded the Black Ship Eternal Vigil with a Slaughter-class cruiser, frigates, and destroyers. Cultists boarded first, followed by Word Bearers Astartes; after their assault stalled and the local navy approached, their commander abandoned the 24 warriors already aboard and withdrew. 177 181

Invasion of Titaly

Erebus launched the Titaly campaign to advance the Word Bearers' planned revenge against Guilliman's Five Hundred Worlds and the Ultramarines for Monarchia's destruction. 201

Working with Night Lords mercenaries, the Word Bearers seized Titaly's starport, destroyed or captured local naval assets, and gained orbital control in under three standard hours. 203

They conquered Kunt Hive after eight hours of fighting, captured its inhabitants as slaves, and ordered those of suitable age converted into war thralls. 204

The ground campaign stalled against Imperial reinforcements. Word Bearers ambushes and direct assaults inflicted losses on the Tenth Company, but Gorgias defeated a Word Bearer challenger and the attacking force at Micro Peak Mine was destroyed. 207

Samuel attempted to hold Kunt Hive while awaiting Erebus's reinforcements and preparing a “center-burst” attack. The Legion's ritual sacrifices subsequently brought Khorne Daemons into the battle, though the summoned daemon army slaughtered Chaos cultists before charging Imperial lines. 213 225

Second and Third Battles of Titaly

Erebus commanded the fleet from the Ravager-class battleship The Emperor Must Die. His forces fielded captured cruisers, five frigates, six destroyers, and the Night Lords cruiser Shadow Hunter. 227

Word Bearers reinforcements led by Erebus aboard the Claw of the Gods temporarily reversed the naval battle, destroying several Imperial escorts and threatening the Holy Fury Hammer. 232

Peter's force was accidentally teleported onto The Emperor Must Die, fought through its defenders, and attacked Erebus on the bridge. Erebus escaped by teleportation after losing a hand and much of his face; the Forged Steel Brethren's First Company subsequently cleared the crippled flagship. 245 247 251 252

Erebus regrouped the fleet from the Chaos Judgment, but the arrival of Black Templar and Ultramarines reinforcements shifted the battle against him. After two ships deserted and the fleet was encircled, he ordered an organized withdrawal from Titaly under heavy losses. 252 253 257 258

Maelstrom Raids

A later Word Bearers raiding fleet operated near the Maelstrom's center under the strike cruiser Blasphemous Tongue, with two cruisers, two frigates, and three destroyers. 369

During the engagement with the Forged Steel Chapter patrol fleet, Peter boarded and captured the Moon-class cruiser Obedient, personally killing Captain Kalik. The Blasphemous Tongue and two other ships escaped through Warp travel powered by the sacrifice of more than 300 slaves. 370 371
