History

Millennium of ranked-family control

The five ranked families accumulated deep commercial networks, resource channels, and local influence over approximately a thousand years. Their power extended beyond formal cultivation status: low-tier families offered them gifts, many local forces depended on their businesses, and successive County Magistrates were either pressured into cooperation or driven from office. 205 219 271

This monopoly prevented low-tier families from obtaining the resources and opportunity needed to become ranked families. The Beishan Village Jiang Family, among the county's strongest low-tier families, regarded advancement as nearly impossible under the five-family order. 187 211

Cai Minglang's deadlock

Cai Minglang became County Magistrate three years before Meng Haoran's intervention. He attempted forceful reforms, but the five families resisted collectively, leaving the County Yamen isolated and ineffective beyond Chiyang County Town. Previous magistrates had eventually been defeated by the same pressure and become corrupt collaborators; Cai remained in open conflict with the families instead. 154 160 164

The Fang Family escalated the conflict by maintaining a hidden cave of wild Spirit Beasts in the Tianyang Mountain Range. Its plan was to unleash a Spirit Beast disaster severe enough to force Cai from office. 157 160

Meng Family entry and Yamen alliance

The Meng Family entered Chiyang County through the Black Market, using Elder Jiang and Granny Yu to sell cultivation resources. After Song Zhiyi and the Meng Family presented Commandery Governor Tang Shouyuan's authorization, Cai Minglang agreed to cooperate with them despite initial suspicion over their covert Black Market presence. 123 163 166

Meng Jingshan secured permission to establish a merchant guild in Chiyang County with standing no lower than that of a Ninth-Rank Cultivation Family. Meng Haoran subsequently served as the County Yamen's advisor, while the ranked families mistakenly believed he had been directly sent by the Commandery Governor. 167 182 185

Division of the five families

The Yamen first sealed the merchant houses of the Zhao and Zhou Families, then used their desperation to test and secure their cooperation. In exchange for survival, the two families agreed to submit family records, host Yamen personnel, and sever ties with the Fang-Liu-Fu bloc. 182 194

The Beishan Village Jiang Family then publicly allied with the Yamen, giving low-tier families a visible alternative to the five-family monopoly. 189 191

The Yamen extended its campaign to the Fang, Liu, and Fu Families by sealing their businesses, restricting their resource channels, and ordering participation in a Black Market cleanup. Granny Yu's flight with their goods and payments further damaged their financial position. 196 202 206

Spirit Beast crisis and collapse of the old alliance

The Fang and Fu Families used the Spirit Beast scheme against the Beishan Village Jiang Family, causing major losses and Jiang Chongshan's death. Fang Kaiyuan then used public outrage to demand Cai Minglang and Meng Haoran resign. 243 245

Meng Haoran countered with evidence linking Fang Yueming to the Fang Family, including receipts bearing his signature and spirit seal. The public confrontation exposed the ranked families' involvement in breeding and releasing wild Spirit Beasts, severely damaging their reputation. 248 255

Fang Kaiyuan and Fu Zhaoming later killed Liu Qichen, attempting to redirect blame and preserve their own positions. The Liu Family subsequently pledged cooperation to the County Yamen. 258 278

Continuing conflict

Following Liu Qichen's death, the County Yamen planned to absorb the Liu Family's forces, use the Zhao and Zhou Families as its vanguard, and rebuild the weakened Jiang Family into a future ranked family. 280 282

Fang Kaiyuan and Fu Zhaoming nevertheless launched a nighttime assassination attempt against Meng Haoran at the County Yamen. A surge of spiritual energy destroyed part of the Yamen courtyard, severely injured Fu Zhaoming, and drew the county's residents to the scene after Meng Haoran exposed the intruders. 283 284
