Fang Yueming's Disappearance

When Fang Yueming vanishes during a routine visit to the Fang Family's Spirit Beast cave, Fang Kaiyuan orders an exhaustive search. He fears that Yueming will reveal the family's secret research into controlling wild Spirit Beasts if captured by an enemy 162.

The disappearance becomes more alarming when the cave's guards and nearly one hundred caged Spirit Beasts also disappear. Fang Kaiyuan concludes that an outside force may be gathering evidence to destroy the Fang Family and temporarily becomes hesitant to make aggressive moves 171.

Conflict with the Chiyang County Yamen

Fang Kaiyuan leads the Fang, Fu, and Liu Families against Cai Minglang's reforms, which increase taxes, restrict sales, and reduce the rank families' access to cultivation projects 171. When the Yamen begins sealing their businesses, he attempts to turn rogue cultivators against Meng Haoran by claiming the rank families alone can supply cultivation resources to Chiyang County 199 200.

As the Zhao and Zhou Families defect to the Yamen and Granny Yu flees with Fang Family goods and payments, Kaiyuan increasingly regards Meng Haoran as the principal danger to his faction 196 201 202.

Spirit Beast Attack on Beishan Village

Facing political decline, Fang Kaiyuan and Fu Zhaoming decide to release drugged wild Spirit Beasts near Beishan Village. Their plan is to cause casualties, discredit Cai Minglang, and force his resignation through public outrage 231.

After the attack devastates the Jiang Family and kills Jiang Chongshan, Fang Kaiyuan publicly presents himself as a concerned elder. He incites the gathered population, accuses the County Magistrate of mismanagement, and claims the Yamen's policies left Chiyang County vulnerable 242 243 244.

Exposure and the Fall of the Alliance

Meng Haoran produces the imprisoned Fang Yueming before the public. Fang Kaiyuan is visibly shocked, but refuses to acknowledge Yueming as a Fang Family member because Yueming can connect the family to the Spirit Beast operation 246 247.

When the evidence threatens the Fang Family, Kaiyuan attacks Liu Qichen and frames him as the party responsible for breeding and releasing the Spirit Beasts. He and Fu Zhaoming later murder Liu in his own residence, intending to present his death as suicide and leave him as the sole scapegoat 253 254 258.

Attempted Assassination of Meng Haoran

With the Fang and Fu Families isolated and their political position collapsing, Fang Kaiyuan agrees to assassinate Meng Haoran at the Chiyang County Yamen 279. He and Fu Zhaoming infiltrate the Yamen at night, intending to kill Meng quickly and leave no evidence behind 283.

The pair are ambushed by an unknown source of powerful spiritual energy. Fang Kaiyuan survives and attempts to flee, abandoning the severely injured Fu Zhaoming, but Cai Minglang prevents his escape 284.
