"Sister Wanjun, how could the company do this? This is too much."
Inside Xinyi Huyou's office building, a round-faced girl of average height spoke indignantly to the stunningly beautiful woman beside her.
"They clearly promised that this song would be the title track of your new album, Sister Wanjun. What right does the company have to take it away and give it to someone else..."
The round-faced girl was so angry that tears were about to fall. She even seemed a little wronged.
Over the past few years, Sister Wanjun had become popular as soon as she debuted. Though the company had played a part in it.
Xinyi Huyou was only a second-tier entertainment company, after all. Wang Wanjun had reached the top ranks among second-tier singers mainly through her own talent.
"Enough, Xiuxiu. Don't say any more. I don't care anymore."
The beautiful woman comforted the round-faced girl named Xiuxiu. Though her words were meant to reassure her, they carried more of a sense of defeat.
Wang Wanjun, whose real name was Wang Siyi. Wang Wanjun was her stage name, and there had been many reasons for choosing it.
The biggest reason was that she had felt the final character in her name had too many strokes. Some fans did not even know how to pronounce it, so she simply changed to a stage name.
Wang Siyi silently sighed. Her new album was in preparation—how could she not be anxious? A song she had personally picked had been snatched away by a newcomer who had just debuted.
There were many reasons, but the main one was that Xinyi Huyou wanted Wang Siyi to obey the company's arrangements and attend dinner parties and drinking parties on its behalf.
They even hoped, if only slightly, that Wang Siyi would submit to being exploited by the bosses behind the capital.
As an entertainment company that was neither here nor there, Xinyi Huyou's bosses dreamed of expanding and growing bigger. Naturally, they could not do that without capital backing.
As the company's biggest star, Wang Siyi was expected by Xinyi Huyou to obey every arrangement the company made.
And so the conflict erupted. Wang Siyi could never agree to the company's arrangements, let alone submit to being exploited.
She would not even attend drinking parties for business entertainment. She only wanted to sing. It was something she had loved since childhood, and it was also her dream.
The company had trained her, but she knew perfectly well that the profits she had brought Xinyi Huyou had long surpassed its original investment in her.
Yet the company was not satisfied. Like a vampire, it cared nothing for her feelings.
Wang Siyi did not lack money. Born into a Scholarly Family, her mother was a lecturer at a university law school, while her father was deeply knowledgeable about poetry and classical texts. He was a member of the Huaxia Poetry Association and the president of Jinling University. Her grandfather, meanwhile, was a famous painter.
Born into such a family, Wang Siyi had instead fallen in love with singing. She wanted to become a star, to become a Diva, and had secretly applied to the music department during the college entrance exams.
Because of that, her relationship with her family remained strained to this day. Her mother, especially, was unwilling to acknowledge her as her daughter.
"Is this the entertainment industry?"
Wang Siyi had debuted three years ago. In those three years, she had risen from an unknown nobody to a second-tier singer, and everything had gone smoothly. She had never imagined that the first setback of her life would come from the company that had trained her.
Back when her parents had painstakingly told her how dark the entertainment industry was, she had not cared in the slightest. She had only held firmly to her belief in singing.
Now, she had seen the darkness her parents had once spoken of. She was beginning to feel sad. Had her persistence all these years been worth it?
Once someone began doubting themselves, they often became very fragile.
Her new album was due in four months. Otherwise, not only would she fail to become a first-tier singer, she would also face further trouble from the company.
She still had a year left on her contract. The best-case scenario was to write songs and seek out songs herself, then independently put together a full album.
Her contract with the company stipulated that, no matter what, she had to release at least one album's worth of songs each year.
The song that had been taken from her was originally meant to be the title track of her album. At the moment, she was only lacking that one song.
But the company had pulled this stunt, as though forcing Wang Siyi to obediently surrender.
But Wang Siyi had a fierce temperament too. Take it if you want. I don't care.
Though she was upset and aggrieved, Wang Siyi still decided to try for herself and see whether she could write a song.
If Xinyi Huyou wanted to keep acting like a clown, then let it. Even if she lost her dream of singing, she would never attend those business dinners.
Wang Siyi decided to leave the company for a while and have some peace and quiet by herself.
She had never felt it before, but now the company felt like a cage, pressing down on her until she could barely breathe.
Wang Siyi wanted to go home. She had not returned in years, and she missed her father and mother terribly.
But when she thought of the disappointment on her father's face and the fury on her mother's when they had seen her choose music, Wang Siyi ultimately gave up on the idea.
She was afraid that her parents were still angry and would not acknowledge her as their daughter. If she failed in her attempt to become a first-tier singer this time, then she would accept her fate, go home to apologize to them, and become their obedient daughter.
But she still did not want to give up on her dream. She had persisted for more than a decade. There was no reason to simply let it go.
She wanted to try once more. Though the entertainment industry was dark, she only needed to stay true to herself.
Since she could not go home, Wang Siyi thought of the several apartments she had bought in Yangcheng. After considering it for a while, she decided to go to Yangcheng.
"Xiuxiu, help me book a flight to Yangcheng for tomorrow..."
Wang Siyi said to the young girl beside her, Xiuxiu.
"Huh? Sister Wanjun, you're not taking me with you?"
Xiuxiu looked at Wang Siyi pitifully. She had been Wang Siyi's assistant from the day she joined the company and was almost always by her side.
"I'm going to look for inspiration and write songs this time. You don't need to come with me. Stay here and keep an eye on what's happening at the company..."
Wang Siyi explained. She truly treated Xiuxiu like a younger sister. Xiuxiu had been with her even before she became popular.
She had never complained. The last time Wang Siyi had been stopped by several hooligans late at night, Xiuxiu had blamed herself terribly.
But Wang Siyi knew it had little to do with Xiuxiu. She herself had simply been too careless.
After quickly packing her luggage, Wang Siyi boarded a flight to Yangcheng. She no longer held any hope for Xinyi Huyou.
At worst, they would shelve her. There was only one year left on her contract, and Wang Siyi now deeply regretted signing with such a company in the first place.
At ten that night, just after getting off the plane, Wang Siyi received a call from her agent.
"Wanjun, why did you leave the company and go to Yangcheng without even telling me..."
The voice on the other end kept chattering away. Wang Siyi only listened without speaking.
"The company really went too far. So what if the song is gone? I have some resources of my own too. I know several pretty good lyricists and composers. I'll ask around and see if there's anything suitable for you..."
The woman on the other end continued speaking, but Wang Wanjun felt warmth in her heart.
In the years since her debut, the company itself might have been terrible, but the assistant and agent assigned to her had both been wonderful people.
Xiuxiu was considerate and took excellent care of her. The woman chattering on the phone was Chen Baozhu, her agent.
She had also contributed greatly to Wang Siyi becoming a second-tier singer over the past few years.
She had fought with the company for resources on Wang Siyi's behalf and used her own connections to secure resources for her. She had truly spared no effort.
The first time Chen Baozhu saw Wang Siyi, she felt that this girl would become at least a first-tier singer one day. Not only was she beautiful as a flower, but she also possessed an ethereal voice.
The facts proved Chen Baozhu right. Wang Siyi had quickly reached the status of a second-tier singer and become the company's biggest artist.
But this trash company refused to act like decent human beings. Instead of supporting its biggest star, it actually wanted to force its artists into submission through suppression.
I must have been blind to join a company like this.
"Sister Baozhu, it's okay. I want to rest for a while. I'll try writing songs myself first. If I can't write one, we'll talk about it then..."
Afraid that Chen Baozhu on the other end would go on endlessly, Wang Siyi hurriedly said. Sister Baozhu was truly capable of talking for half an hour if no one stopped her.
"Fine, you get some rest first. I've just gotten in touch with a lyricist and composer. I'll see if I can try to get a song for you..."
"Then thank you, Sister Baozhu."
After hanging up, Wang Siyi took a taxi back to Xingfuli. She had bought an apartment in Yangcheng because her grandfather had lived there. Her grandfather had been the only one who had not opposed her singing.
When her grandfather was still alive, she would occasionally come to Yangcheng and stay for a few days. Of the two apartments, one had belonged to her grandfather, while the other had been bought by herself. After he passed away, she rarely came to Yangcheng anymore.
The last time she came was because she missed her grandfather. Though he had passed away at the beginning of the year, she had wanted to come alone and take a look at his apartment.
She just had not expected to run into several hooligans. If not for a man who had stepped in to help, she might have been molested by those drunkards.
As she walked through the corridor of Xingfuli, lost in thought, Wang Siyi looked at the somewhat familiar doorway before her and remembered her grandfather.
But her grandfather was gone. The only person who had supported her was no longer around, and Wang Siyi's mood began to sink.
Just as she was about to take out her key and open the door, Wang Siyi froze. She searched through the bag she had brought with her, but could not find the key anywhere.
"I forgot to bring the key back..."
Wang Siyi pursed her lips at the door, not knowing what to do. At this hour, there was no one left at the property management office.
A hotel... After what happened last time, she did not dare walk alone on the streets late at night.
She sat helplessly on the stairs, hugging her knees with both arms, looking helpless and pitiful.
She did not know where to go tonight. Even if Xiuxiu came from Shanghai, the soonest she could arrive would be tomorrow.
Wang Siyi wondered if this was her zodiac year and she was offending Tai Sui. It was not that she believed in superstition; she had simply been far too unlucky this year.
Her grandfather had left her at the beginning of the year. Her career, which had once gone so smoothly, was now suffering suppression from the company.
She considered herself strong, but realizing that she had been foolish enough to forget her keys seemed to become the final straw that broke the camel's back.
Her eyes reddened, and she wanted to cry out, but forcibly held it back, allowing only her tears to stream down her cheeks.
