Background / History
Yu Chaoyang is Li Qingshan's disciple and Li Jiusheng's grand-nephew in the Shangqing Palace lineage. Because Li Qingshan joined the sect late, Yu Chaoyang spent several childhood years being raised by Li Jiusheng before returning to cultivate under his master. He retained deep respect and affection for Li Jiusheng. 3
At seventeen, Yu Chaoyang became a Grandmaster and left Shangqing Palace to temper himself in the outside world. Before leaving, he boldly promised Li Jiusheng that he would make a name for himself and bring back a niece-in-law. 3
During his travels, he became infatuated with Saintess Yu Yao. After provoking her sect and defeating its younger generation, he fought Yu Yao to a draw and arranged a second contest in the Heavenly Emperor City ruins: whoever obtained the greater opportunity would win. His own master was wagered as part of the agreement without Li Qingshan's prior knowledge. 48 56
Within the Southern Ridge Deadly Land, Yu Chaoyang recklessly absorbed dense Spiritual Energy in an attempt to surpass Yu Yao. The energy carried seeds of the Bewildering Butterfly Ancient Tree, which nearly turned him into nourishment for the tree. Li Jiusheng found and saved him, then brought him along to explore the ruins. 55 57
Li Jiusheng later obtained a Dragon Whisker Root for Yu Chaoyang through the stone tablets of the medicinal mountain. Yu Chaoyang used the divine medicine as proof that he had won his contest with Yu Yao. 63 64 66
After returning to Shangqing Palace, Li Qingshan ordered Yu Chaoyang to face the wall at Reflection Cliff for half a year because of his reckless conduct. Li Jiusheng instructed him to use the confinement to refine the Grandmaster-level techniques he had been taught. 72
Appearance
Yu Chaoyang is described as a thin, tall young man with an exceptional bearing, sharp eyes, and prominent brows. 55
- Reached the Grandmaster Realm at seventeen. 3
- Carries himself with conspicuous confidence and often adopts a proud, showy demeanor. 56
- Was compared unfavorably to Li Jiusheng and Li Qingshan in maturity, rather than talent. 55 72
Personality
Yu Chaoyang is talented, outgoing, and extremely talkative. He habitually boasts about his master, Shangqing Palace, and his own future, while his tendency to act first and think later repeatedly puts him in danger. 3 55 56
He is deeply devoted to Li Jiusheng and Li Qingshan despite his loose tongue. When Li Jiusheng faced Dao Taichu, Yu Chaoyang was overcome with fear and regret that he had spent too much time chasing romance instead of cultivating enough strength to protect his elders. 70
Yu Chaoyang can accept criticism when confronted with the consequences of his actions. After the Bewildering Butterfly Ancient Tree incident, he acknowledged his greed, accepted Li Jiusheng's guidance, and resolved to cultivate more diligently. 55 57
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation Talent
Yu Chaoyang's cultivation speed places him among Shangqing Palace's foremost young talents.
- Reached the Grandmaster Realm at seventeen. 3
- Advanced from Grandmaster to Great Grandmaster during his years outside the sect. 55
- Fought Saintess Yu Yao to a draw despite her superior sect resources. 48
- Defeated the younger generation of Yu Yao's sect while attempting to force a duel with her. 48
Grandmaster-Level Technique Training
After saving Yu Chaoyang from the Bewildering Butterfly Ancient Tree's seeds, Li Jiusheng circulated several Grandmaster-level techniques through his body and had him memorize their operational paths. Yu Chaoyang remembered them after one circulation. 55
- The techniques used in his cleansing included sword techniques, Savage Force, the Earth Store's Original Vows Sutra, and the Four Forms of Sword Intent. 55
- Li Jiusheng stated that diligent cultivation of these methods could support Yu Chaoyang's future path toward the Ancestor Realm. 56
- His six-month confinement was specifically intended to refine these teachings and temper his impetuous temperament. 72
- He has not yet demonstrated mastery of the techniques comparable to Li Jiusheng's. 56 72
Limitations
Yu Chaoyang's confidence often exceeds his judgment.
- He absorbed suspiciously abundant Spiritual Energy without investigating it, allowing ancient tree seeds to infest his body. 55
- He could not resist the pressure of a peak Venerable and was nearly forced to kneel before Li Jiusheng intervened. 66
- During Dao Taichu's attack, he was powerless to aid Li Jiusheng against Grandmaster-level force. 70
Equipment / Items
- Dragon Whisker Root — A rare divine medicine at least five thousand years old, obtained for Yu Chaoyang by Li Jiusheng. It can improve bone structure and comprehension, with effects likened to being washed by a True Dragon's vital blood. 63 64
- Communication Crystal — A palm-sized Divine Source crystal used to exchange messages within roughly five hundred miles. It consumes substantial Primordial Spirit power with each use. 57
Relationships
- Li Qingshan — Master and Shangqing Palace Sect Master. Yu Chaoyang is Li Qingshan's sole disciple, though his master frequently disciplines him for his rashness. 3 72
- Li Jiusheng — Martial uncle and childhood caretaker. Li Jiusheng repeatedly rescues, teaches, scolds, and supports Yu Chaoyang as if he were his own child. 3 55 57
- Saintess Yu Yao — Yu Chaoyang's romantic interest and competitive rival. He openly pursues her and arranged a contest in the Heavenly Emperor City ruins for the right to continue courting her. 48 56 66
- Jin Yuyi — Old friend who helped Yu Chaoyang and Li Jiusheng locate traces of the Heavenly Emperor City ruins. 57
- Jin Jiuling — Jin Family elder who cooperated with Li Jiusheng in the stone tablet forest and recognized that Li Jiusheng's divine-medicine efforts were meant to support Yu Chaoyang. 63
