Personality

Emperor Wu of Zhou is arrogant, domineering, and intensely vengeful. In his youth, he treated weaker cultivators with contempt, killed numerous talented opponents, and later hunted down those who bore grudges against him rather than allowing any challenge to remain. 6 7 36

His inability to defeat the Thousand-Year Sword God became an obsession and inner demon. Although he befriended the swordsman and accepted his aid during a life-or-death crisis, he never abandoned his intention to eliminate him. 12 36

He is also calculating when direct force is unavailable. While recovering from repeated injuries, he used Primordial Spirit possession to enter the ruins near Shangqing Palace, sought the Grandmaster Pure Land in secret, and later arranged alliances and assassinations against Shangqing Palace. 31 38 40

Background

Rise of Luochuan Sect’s Prodigy

Legend holds that nine True Dragons circled the sky when Emperor Wu of Zhou was born. Daoists who examined him publicly declared his talent ordinary, but Luochuan Sect secretly accepted him as a disciple after recognizing his exceptional potential. 36

After decades of cultivation, he left Luochuan Sect and brought bloody turmoil to the cultivation world. His repeated victories, killings, and eventual Raid and Sweep established the invincible Aura that carried him into the Grandmaster Realm. 6 36

He later defeated the younger generation of the Old Land and became one of the Four Emperors, alongside the Thousand-Year Sword God of the Old Land, the Buddhist Sect’s Rulai, and the Daoist Ancestor. He could not defeat Rulai or the Daoist Ancestor, forcing him to accept the shared title. 11

Friendship and Betrayal of the Thousand-Year Sword God

The Thousand-Year Sword God was the only person Emperor Wu of Zhou acknowledged as a friend. Their first clashes ended in draws; afterward, they repeatedly fought or exchanged insights whenever either reached a bottleneck. 11 12

When an elder nearly at the Ancestor Realm cornered Emperor Wu of Zhou, the Sword God intervened and helped repel the enemy. Despite this debt, Emperor Wu of Zhou retained his determination to kill him. 12 36

At the Sword God’s wedding to a Fox Woman from the Outer Domain, Emperor Wu of Zhou arrived with ten Great Dao sect elders and denounced the union. During the ensuing battle, he attacked the Fox Woman while the elders restrained the Sword God; Emperor Wu of Zhou broke into the Ancestor Realm and killed his former friend. 12 13

The Sword God’s final attack shattered Emperor Wu of Zhou’s newly formed Ancestor foundation, forcing him into seclusion. 12 36

Conflict with Shangqing Palace

After two hundred years of recovery, Emperor Wu of Zhou emerged and personally killed Shangqing Palace’s Peerless Sword Immortal, Li Tianxian. Her desperate Grass and Wood Sword Technique severed his Ancestor foundation again, sending him back into seclusion for another century. 1 4 12

A century later, his disciple Zhang Wudao murdered Shangqing Palace’s Sect Master and demanded its Blessed Land as a dojo for Emperor Wu of Zhou. Zhang Wudao was killed by Li Qingshan using the Grass and Wood Sword Technique. 3 4 8

Emperor Wu of Zhou then planned to annihilate Shangqing Palace during Li Qingshan’s Sect Master enthronement ceremony. Before he could depart, the Thousand-Year Sword God’s remnant soul sent a ninety-thousand-li sword strike into Luochuan Sect. Emperor Wu of Zhou’s Invincible Golden Body failed to withstand it; his nine halos shattered and his foundation was severed for a third time. 14 15

Grandmaster Pure Land Incident

Unable to leave seclusion in person, Emperor Wu of Zhou possessed the body of an elderly Luochuan Sect Venerable and secretly entered the ruins near Shangqing Palace to steal the Grandmaster Pure Land. Li Qingshan exposed him, forcing the possessed body to self-destruct. 31 35 39

His damaged remnant soul then attempted to possess Li Jiusheng. Within Li Jiusheng’s consciousness, Emperor Wu of Zhou used the Heaven-Slaying Sword Drawing Technique, but Li Jiusheng’s superior version destroyed both the technique and the remnant soul. 36 37

The failed possession cost him the Grandmaster Pure Land and further damaged his main body. He responded by contacting the Yishan Clan, the Human World, and Shangqing Palace’s enemy, the Bajiao Dao Sect, intending to retaliate against Shangqing Palace. 38 40
