Background / History
Er Wa was one of the sacrificial children of the Gong Yu Tribe in a chaotic Lesser Thousand World. He followed Li Yang's incarnation for ten years, learned basic language and principles, and became the oldest and steadiest of the children under Li Yang's care. When Li Yang embedded the Sky Mending Talisman into the region and made cultivation possible, Er Wa was the first chosen to learn the New Method. 133
His first contemplation of the talisman allowed him to perceive the Heaven, Earth, and Human Daos forming an ordered world. He immediately formed a Primordial Spirit and comprehended divine arts founded on stability, order, safety, and hope. Li Yang renamed him Dong Yuan, explaining that his descent into the world represented purification and redemption. 133
Dong Yuan received the Human Teachings' cyan fortune and a rare wisp of Li Yang's own purple fortune. Li Yang then entrusted him with transmitting the New Method to the remaining sacrificial children, making him their Senior Disciple Brother. 134
After becoming a Ghost Immortal, Dong Yuan traveled with his fellow disciples to spread the Dao. At Xunhe City, he uncovered that the besieging ghosts were former prisoners and slaves whose deaths were tied to the city's customs. He cleansed the black river beneath the city with a Fire Lotus, sought a means to pacify the ghosts, and learned the Incense Faith Method from Li Yang. 138 139 140
Dong Yuan established a Spiritual Realm at Xunhe City, used faith-powered offerings to feed and pacify ghosts, and became its City God. Following Li Yang's departure from the Lesser Thousand World, he continued teaching, enfeoffing spirits, refining Divine Soldiers and Generals, and expanding his Daoist court for more than a thousand mortal-world years. 140 141 146
When he ascended, Dong Yuan brought his followers with him rather than abandoning them. Li Yang formally accepted him as a Personal Disciple after his transformation in the Immortal Transformation Pool and entrusted him with the Golden Book, the true spirits of his Divine Soldiers and Generals, and a greater role within the Heavenly Court. 146 147
Personality
Dong Yuan is steady, dutiful, and deeply loyal to Li Yang. Though initially described as a late bloomer, he proved exceptionally perceptive when faced with the Sky Mending Talisman and became a reliable organizer almost immediately. 133 134
He values responsibility toward subordinates as much as personal advancement. Before ascending, he offered every Divine Soldier and General the choice to remain behind or follow him; when they chose to follow, he accepted responsibility for their safety in the upper realm. 146
As a leader, Dong Yuan is composed under pressure but uncompromising toward those who defy Heaven's mandate or endanger the people under his protection. He can be stern enough that even disciples and grand-disciples stronger than himself instinctively fear his displeasure. 147 159 160
