The suburbs.
Here stood a large country house in an excellent location, with winds blowing in from all sides and a lake not far away.
Unfortunately, a crooked tree by the lake blocked the view.
The weather was gloomy and foggy. From outside, the house looked as though it were sunk into the murk, its wooden walls faded to a grayish yellow much like dirt.
Clusters of withered yellow vines climbed from the foundation to the eaves, their roots buried deep in the cracks of the walls, binding the house like a tightly strangled corpse.
Inside the house.
Roger and Carolyn, their five daughters, and the Warrens sat together in the living room. The weather outside cast a shadow over everyone's hearts.
Caroline was the first to break down.
"Roger, let's just move out. I'd rather sleep on the streets than spend another day in this house."
Roger felt miserable. If not for their meager savings and five daughters to support, why wouldn't he want to move?
Lorraine spoke then, delivering words of despair.
"Even if you leave, the evil spirit will still find you. The bruises on your body are marks it left behind. It has already set its sights on you."
Ed promptly reassured them.
"Don't worry. Your situation has been confirmed, and the Holy See has approved an exorcism ritual. Everything will be all right."
Caroline and Roger forced faint smiles onto their faces.
At this point, they could only trust that the Holy See could truly drive out the demon.
The five daughters had been no less frightened than their mother. No matter what, they refused to sleep in their rooms that night and planned to sleep together in the living room, where they felt at least a little safer.
