They unanimously decided to cross the Black Forest.

This group included Luke and his three friends, Phil, Hutch, and Dom.

Their reason for choosing this route was simple. Dom had injured his foot while walking, and if they wanted to finish this ten-plus-hour hike as quickly as possible, they had to take a shortcut.

Before that, they needed to make one final resupply at the town at the foot of the mountain.

Perhaps because most people had chosen this route, many hikers had also opted for the shortcut through the Black Forest.
