Background / History

Art first appears as a silent, black-and-white clown stalking Tara and Dawn. He enjoys pursuing terrified victims rather than immediately killing them, treating Tara's flight as a game. His speed is far beyond that of an ordinary human, and he can return through videotapes made from his victims. 24 26

Li Dan finds Art critically injured but initially cannot contain him because of his immortal body. Rather than leave, Li Dan restrains and experiments on him through the night, learning that Art regenerates slowly, recovers faster where he is unnoticed, and can be delayed by dismemberment. Once containment becomes possible, Art is sealed in Club Five. 27

Afterward, Art becomes one of Li Dan's earliest and most frequently deployed entities. Li Dan repeatedly uses him as a scout, distraction, and disposable first attacker because Art can survive injuries that would kill ordinary fighters. 37 47 62

Art later becomes more confident after being allowed to punish Mark and his accomplices. He keeps them alive while torturing and dismembering them, reveling in their fear and showing the full extent of his sadism. 52 54

When Li Dan trades Art to Pinhead in place of Old Joe, Art is taken into Hell by the Cenobites. Endless torture forces him to abandon his old body and become a gray-black liquid symbiote capable of merging with hosts. 137 304

Li Dan subsequently tests Art's symbiosis with Michael and an Alien, then forcibly fuses him with the Deadlights. The experiment destroys the Alien host but transforms Art into Joker, a fear-based entity with a reality-distorting Black-and-White Ghost Domain. 305 306 307

Appearance

Art originally resembles a grotesque silent clown in black-and-white makeup, carrying a black plastic bag and often wearing a small top hat. His painted smile is comical at a glance but unnerving in context. 24 62

  • Signature bag — Carries hammers, saws, chainsaws, props, and other improvised weapons. 47 69
  • Original expression — Habitually grins, even while being attacked, frightened, or severely injured. 37 62
  • Symbiote form — A gray-black liquid capable of covering a host's body or reconstructing Art's clown-like face. 304 305
  • Rebirth costume — Can form a sharp black-and-white clown outfit with jagged cuffs and a distorted smiling face on the chest. 305
  • Joker form — Retains the clown silhouette and top hat, but possesses orange-yellow light within his eye sockets and a body filled with trapped soul remnants. 306
  • Domain manifestation — Becomes a distorted giant with scythe-like arms, insectoid legs, and an impossibly stretched smile. 306

Personality

Art is sadistic, childish, and theatrically cruel. He enjoys watching victims panic, torturing helpless targets, and using humiliating or absurd attacks such as repeatedly hammering an opponent's toes. 26 54 69

Despite his murderous nature, Art is not fearless. He can feel pain, fears unknown threats, and is visibly relieved when containment ends Li Dan's prolonged experimentation. 27 62 His immortality makes him difficult to kill, not immune to suffering.

Art is emotionally expressive despite being largely nonverbal. He sulks over losing trophies, becomes jealous when Hell Wendigo evolves, and cries on Li Dan's leg until promised priority for a future empowerment opportunity. 89 130

After becoming Joker, Art can communicate through gestures and mental transmission. He is capable of speech but does not consider spoken language necessary. 305 307

Abilities & Skills

Soulbreaking Immortality

Art's original immortal body allows him to recover from otherwise fatal injuries.

  • Regeneration is slow under ordinary conditions but improves in corners or places where no one pays attention. 27
  • Dismemberment delays his recovery; separating his legs from the rest of his body prevents reassembly for at least half a day. 27
  • He feels pain and fear despite surviving extreme injuries. 27 62
  • His original immortality can fail against sufficiently devastating damage. 27

Instant Movement and Curse Transmission

Art's early supernatural traits center on acting from places outside direct attention.

  • Instant Movement — Gains increased movement speed in unnoticed corners and hidden spaces. 27
  • Curse Transmission — Can spread through videotapes or videos and return to reality through them. 24 27
  • Soulbreaker — As a dead soul wandering Hell, he has a chance to break his soul and revive. 27

Symbiotic Rebirth

After Hell transforms Art into a liquid symbiote, he can merge with a host rather than relying on a fixed humanoid body.

  • Can form clothing, weapons, and other physical equipment around a host. 305
  • Can enter a ghost form that moves invisibly and passes through objects. 305
  • Enhances a host's strength, speed, senses, and perception of spiritual particles and hidden energy fluctuations. 304 305
  • Feeds on fear—particularly human fear—and flesh to replenish both himself and his host. 305
  • Successfully fused with Michael, creating an immortal fluid-bodied killer with a serrated scimitar arm. 305
  • Temporarily fused with an Alien, granting the host regeneration, acid attacks, liquid evasion, enhanced senses, and the ability to strike ghosts. 305 306
  • The Deadlights reject the Alien component; it is expelled and dies during Art's final transformation. 306

Black-and-White Ghost Domain

As Joker, Art can create a monochrome Ghost Domain that suppresses color, identity, and weaker supernatural beings.

  • The Domain drains color from its surroundings and distorts space. 306
  • Fear becomes a corrosive force that can strip weaker beings of consciousness and individuality, reducing them to shadows assimilated into the Domain. 307
  • Generates nightmare creatures from fear and spiritual power, including faceless figures, floating eyes, predatory shadows, and assembled-limb monsters. 306
  • Can suppress Ghost Lake; Li Dan believes it could have absorbed him without his Demon Form and layered defenses. 306
  • Art uses the Domain to trap the possessed May in a silent, colorless world, preventing her from attacking Uncle Feng. 344

Faded Hammer

Joker's black bag now produces supernatural implements rather than ordinary props.

  • The Faded Hammer is infused with the Ghost Domain's fading power. 307
  • Can erase ordinary ghosts or strip them into black-and-white afterimages. 307
  • Can severely damage stronger spirits by partially formatting or destroying parts of their existence. 307

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black plastic bag — Art's signature bag; formerly carried improvised weapons and clown props, and later contains evolved supernatural items. 47 69 307
  • Hammer — His preferred weapon, used both in combat and for sadistic torture. 37 69 307
  • Saws and chainsaws — Frequently drawn from his bag, though he relinquishes Jeb's chainsaw when Li Dan orders him to return it. 47 69 89
  • Faded Hammer — Joker's evolved hammer, empowered by the Black-and-White Ghost Domain. 307

Relationships

  • Li Dan — Master and captor. Li Dan uses Art as a scout, decoy, experiment subject, and combatant, but also recognizes his frontline loyalty and promises him future empowerment priority. 27 37 130
  • Chucky Hala Shao — Frequent companion and comic rival. Chucky mocks Art's crying and envies the attention Art receives from Li Dan. 89 130
  • Michael Myers — Initially fights Art in a brutal stalemate; Art later uses Michael as a symbiotic host during Li Dan's experiments. 69 305
  • Pinhead and the Cenobites — Take Art to Hell after Li Dan trades him in Old Joe's place, directly causing his transformation into a symbiote. 137 304
  • Scarecrow / Xiao Dao — Scarecrow attempts to protect Li Dan when Art first returns in liquid form, unaware that the entity is Art. 304
  • Deadlights — Fuses with Art and becomes the dominant force behind Joker's Ghost Domain and soul-based abilities. 306 307
