Awakening

Martial Souls are awakened during formal ceremonies, where children may manifest a usable spirit, a weak spirit, or no spirit at all 2. Lin Du was initially excluded from the process and had to directly request that Red-robed Bishop Jerev allow his awakening 3.

An awakening can produce a conspicuous supernatural phenomenon. Lin Du’s Dragon Ascending Sword awakened alongside a Golden Divine Dragon in the sky; Qian Daoliu concealed the phenomenon with his Six-Winged Angel’s holy light to limit attention 4.

A Martial Soul’s outward appearance does not always identify its classification. Although Lin Du’s awakening included a dragon, Qian Daoliu identified the red-hilted silver Dragon Ascending Sword as a mutated Weapon Spirit rather than a Beast Spirit 4.

Soul Rings and Soul Skills

Soul Rings are acquired from suitable Spirit Beasts and provide Soul Skills. Dai Mubai’s breakthrough to level 40, for example, required finding a suitable Spirit Beast for his fourth Soul Ring 307.

Ring quality can dramatically affect a skill’s output. A Martial Soul Clone from a ten-thousand-year ring can possess full power, while one from a hundred-thousand-year ring can create two identical Weapon Spirits at two hundred percent power 491.

Spirit Possession

Beast Spirits can transform only part of the wielder’s body at lower levels. Yu Tianheng’s Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon manifested through a scaled, clawed right arm; from level 30 onward, each additional ring causes another body part to become dragon-like 284.

At level 70, a Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Soul Master can fully become a dragon through its True Spirit Body 284.

Dragon Ascending Sword

Lin Du describes the Dragon Ascending Sword as a summoning medium rather than his direct means of attack. Its true combat manifestation is the Dragon God mech summoned through the sword 17 29.

Sword of the Sword King

The Sword of the Sword King is the third-ring manifestation of Lin Du’s Martial Soul. It is described as having the ability to “cut through anything” and has severed Martial Souls, Soul Bone connections, space-based attacks, and Dugu Bo’s Time Freeze 80 110 186 424.

• Its Sword King Dragon God form is specialized for close combat and lacks flight capability. 425
• Its severing power can permanently alter a target’s Martial Soul, as seen when Yu Luomian’s dragon horns and wings were cut away, reducing his dragon form to a snake-like state. 110
• Chen Xin considered its sword intent the ultimate profundity of swordsmanship after witnessing it. 424

Evolution and Mutation

Martial Souls can evolve through compatible treasures, Spirit Bones, bloodlines, or special energy.

• The Earth Dragon Golden Melon can grant earth control and may evolve a Sub-dragon Martial Soul into a true dragon-type Martial Soul. 42
• Dugu Yan’s Martial Soul evolved from the Azure Phosphorus Serpent lineage into the Azure Phosphorus Flood Dragon, gaining claws, horns, stronger skills, and doubled bonuses from her first two rings. 80
• A later evolution produced the Azure Phosphorus Green Dragon, which suppresses snake-type and sub-dragon-type Martial Souls, including the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon at equal level. 494
• Lin Du’s Dragon Ascending Sword was judged by Qian Daoliu to exceed both the Seven Kill Sword and the Clear Sky Hammer in inherent power. 4

Twin Martial Souls

Twin Martial Souls permit a Soul Master to cultivate one Martial Soul before attaching rings to the other. Yu Xiaogang’s plan for Tang San was to cultivate Blue Silver Grass first, allowing the unringed Clear Sky Hammer to later receive exceptionally high-level rings 326.

This path carries major risk. Yu Xiaogang states that one historical Twin Martial Soul wielder died after conflict between the two Martial Souls during the third ring added to the second spirit, while another succeeded; he estimates the method’s historical success rate at fifty percent 326.

Bibi Dong’s Twin Martial Souls are unusually harmonious because both are spider-type emperors, unlike Tang San’s unrelated plant and weapon combination 326 422.

Martial Soul Fusion Skills

A Martial Soul Fusion Skill combines compatible Martial Souls into a greater shared technique.

• Dragon Duke and Snake Dowager — Their Dragon-headed Cane and Serpent-headed Cane complement one another; together, the pair can contend with a Title Douluo. 230
• Blue Sunshine Academy — Seven gem Martial Souls can combine through a seven-in-one Martial Soul Fusion Skill centered on the captain’s silver gem. 370
