Background / History

Creation and escape

Team Rocket created Mewtwo from genetic material extracted from a fossilized Mew eyelash. Doctor Fuji participated in the project, which repeatedly recombined Mew's genes to produce an ultimate combat weapon carrying the Destructive Gene 219 992.

Mewtwo was born with immense power, intelligence, and a violent nature deliberately engineered for destruction. Questioning its own origin and purpose, it destroyed Team Rocket's laboratory and parts of its infrastructure before escaping human control 992 993. After later destroying a Team Rocket base, it encountered a spacetime collapse near New Island and arrived in another world 951.

Hua Blue Island and the Mewtwo Game

Witnessing humans command Pokémon and seeing domesticated Pokémon oppress wild Pokémon, Mewtwo concluded that humanity should be overthrown. It seized Hua Blue Island, altered the administrators' memories, rewrote its defenses, and trapped its 600,000 residents as hostages 921 951.

Mewtwo announced the Mewtwo Game, forcing the China and Japan Trainer Associations into a battle against its Pokémon legion. It intended to prove Pokémon superiority, compel Trainers to release their Pokémon, and begin its plan to “Liberate Pokémon” 921 966. It also sought Mew, believing that defeating Mew would establish itself as the “Original Body” and the strongest Pokémon 921 965.

Although hostile, Mewtwo did not kill the island's hostages or captured Trainers, leaving Fang Yuan to believe it had not become irredeemably extreme 946.

Defeat and capture

Fang Yuan attempted to persuade Mewtwo through telepathic conversation and by sharing memories of bonds between humans and Pokémon. Mewtwo remained unconvinced and began the Mewtwo Game, empowering its six Pokémon with Psychic Power against the combined Trainers of China and Japan 965 966.

After Fang Yuan's Infernape defeated Latios, Fang Yuan personally challenged Mewtwo 970 971. During their battle, Mewtwo chose defense over an all-out attack because it feared harming the Pokémon and inhabitants below. Fang Yuan's team overwhelmed its defenses with their combined Z-Move, and Mewtwo accepted defeat 972 973.

Fang Yuan captured Mewtwo and promised to help it explore its potential, including independent Mega Evolution. Mewtwo subsequently accepted Fang Yuan as its Trainer 973 975.

Reassessment of Mew and humanity

Fang Yuan brought Mewtwo to the World Tree, where it learned that Mew still existed in another spacetime and that multiple Mew existed across worlds 974. When Mewtwo finally met the living Mew, it challenged Mew but ultimately refused to force a battle, leaving three Arceus Plates behind as an invitation for a future match 992 993.

Mewtwo also reconsidered its responsibility toward the Pokémon it had created. Rather than keep its clones with itself, it decided they would be better able to experience life under the World Tree Guardian's care 986.

Growth in the Pokémon World

Mewtwo studied Z-Power, Aura, Arceus Plates, and Mega Evolution while serving as a mentor to Groudon and Kyogre. It taught Groudon Autonomous Z-Moves and guided Kyogre's Aura training, while their battles helped Mewtwo stabilize at High-Level Legendary strength 1118 1119 1153.

During the Twin Dragon City Incident, Mewtwo fought Kyurem while using precise Psychic barriers to protect civilians and buildings from the battle's aftermath. Fang Yuan's Heart Power enabled it to complete Mega Evolution for the first time, allowing Mega Mewtwo Y to suppress Kyurem with overwhelming Psychic power and Mega Mewtwo X to overpower it physically 1176 1177.

Mewtwo later became publicly recognized as the hero who protected Twin Dragon City and demonstrated both Mega forms against Regigigas at the World Championships 1176 1197.

Appearance

Mewtwo is a humanoid Pokémon roughly the height of a human, with a silver-white body and an imposing, cold presence 921.

  • Purple tail and abdomen in its base form 921
  • External neural fibers extending from the center of its back to its neck 921
  • Black eyes and a stern, detached expression 921 1119
  • Mega Mewtwo X develops hood-like and armor-like organs, greatly expanded muscles, and overwhelming Aura Power 1176 1197
  • Mega Mewtwo Y becomes smaller, gains red pupils and head-mounted organs resembling headphones, and shifts its purple coloring to its hands and feet 1176 1197

Personality

Mewtwo is cold, proud, intensely competitive, and preoccupied with the meaning of its existence. Its early hostility toward humanity stemmed from Team Rocket's exploitation and from its inability to understand why Pokémon would willingly remain beside humans 951 992.

Its pride initially drove it to seek Mew's defeat and to prove itself as the strongest Pokémon. However, Mewtwo is not mindlessly destructive: it questioned whether its actions on Hua Blue Island were right, preserved the lives of hostages, and restrained itself during its final battle with Fang Yuan to avoid harming others 946 951 972.

After joining Fang Yuan, Mewtwo became more tolerant and protective. It shows concern for Pokémon created or modified under circumstances similar to its own, including its clones and the Genesect, while still retaining a blunt, aloof demeanor 986 1189.

Abilities & Skills

Psychic Power

Mewtwo possesses exceptional Psychic Power and can project it directly onto reality.

  • Uses Telekinesis, Teleport, Telepathy, and Psychic combat techniques 963 1101
  • Creates barriers capable of precisely shielding civilians and buildings from Legendary-level battle damage 1176
  • Uses Future Sight to foresee possible outcomes 960
  • Can alter memories, control minds, manipulate weather, and manifest thoughts into reality 951 1101
  • Uses Time Reversal to reconstruct past events and, at great cost, can revive recently deceased life 1064
  • Can fuse Killing Intent with Confusion to create crushing psychological pressure 993

Genetic Adaptation and Technology

Mewtwo's learning ability allows it to master advanced technology and combat methods after limited exposure.

  • Learned Team Rocket's technology rapidly enough to surpass researchers who had studied it for decades 975
  • Created cloned Pokémon from captured Trainers' genetic data; the clones were stronger than their original counterparts 963
  • Developed modified black Poké Balls capable of capturing Pokémon already inside their Trainers' Poké Balls 963
  • Can perform advanced technological modification and construct facilities such as Hua Blue Island's high-tech castle and arena 951 963
  • Created Flying-type Z-Crystals after studying Team Rocket's stored Z-Crystals 1118

Destructive Gene

The Destructive Gene is the reconstructed Mew-derived genetic foundation designed to make Mewtwo an ultimate weapon.

  • Unlike Eevee, Mewtwo was unaffected by the Destructive Gene from the outset 219
  • Grants immense talent for battle, destruction, and rapidly mastering combat techniques 975
  • Causes Killing Intent to leak involuntarily, though Mewtwo's intellect and self-control prevent it from being ruled by destructive impulses 993
  • Forms the foundation for both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y's development paths 995

Aura and Z-Power

Mewtwo possesses exceptional Aura aptitude inherited through its Mew-derived genetics.

  • Its Aura talent is considered first-rate, and it exchanged Aura knowledge with World Tree Mew 1118
  • Perfectly mastered Nature Power and Autonomous Z-Moves after arriving in the Pokémon World 1177
  • Trained Groudon in Z-Moves and Kyogre in Aura-based perception and control 1118 1153
  • Can create Z-Crystals independently 1118

Mega Evolution

Mewtwo completed autonomous Mega Evolution during its battle with Kyurem, aided by Fang Yuan's Heart Power 1176 1177.

  • Mega Mewtwo X — Converts Psychic energy into physical power, becoming a Psychic- and Fighting-type form with overwhelming strength, speed, and Aura 1176 1177
  • Mega Mewtwo Y — Compresses physical potential to elevate Psychic power to its extreme; capable of gravity control, large-scale Psychic suppression, and powerful Hypnosis 1176 1197
  • Can switch freely between X and Y Forms during battle 1176 1197
  • Cannot effectively survive or fight in outer space despite its adaptability; Fang Yuan identifies transcending Mew's planetary limitations as its next possible path 1215

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Modified black Poké Balls — Developed to capture Pokémon already owned by Trainers 963
  • DNA Splicers — Taken for study after the Twin Dragon City Incident; Fang Yuan expects Mewtwo's genetic expertise to uncover new applications 1178
  • Flying, Water, and Dragon Stone Plates — Retrieved from Mew's storage space for study, then used as stakes in Mewtwo's proposed battle with Mew 980 993

Relationships

  • Fang Yuan — Trainer, captor, mentor, and frequent source of irritation. Fang Yuan defeated Mewtwo, helped it discover its Mega Evolution potential, and earned its recognition 972 973 975.
  • Mew — The source of the genes used to create Mewtwo, though not a member of the same species. Mewtwo's desire to defeat Mew shaped its early purpose 992 993.
  • Latias and Latios — Legendary Pokémon that followed Mewtwo and blocked the China and Japan teams from entering Hua Blue Cave 965.
  • Mewtwo's clones — Pokémon created from captured Trainers' teams for the Mewtwo Game. Mewtwo later recognized their right to live freely rather than remain under its control 963 977 986.
  • Groudon and Kyogre — Students and sparring partners. Mewtwo trained Groudon in Z-Moves and Kyogre in Aura while using their power to improve itself 1118 1153.
  • Genesect — Mewtwo empathizes with the modified Fossil Pokémon because their confusion and displacement mirror its own origins 1189.
  • Team Rocket — The organization that created and exploited Mewtwo as a weapon; its actions are the root of Mewtwo's distrust of humanity 951 992.
