His “reputation first” approach allows the family business to surpass its rival, the Li Family; after Li Yong falls afoul of the county magistrate, Lu Longjing capitalizes on the opening and the Lu Family becomes Lingbao County’s largest medicinal merchant. 7 16

Before the family gains sufficient martial strength, he is forced to accommodate Iron Dragon Stockade’s escalating demands. He recognizes that the stockade has broken prior arrangements and fears that its growing brazenness signals imminent disorder, but he still pays Li Jing’s demanded tribute rather than endanger his household. 2 13
