Background and History
Historical pattern
The Taiping Sect has existed for approximately three to four thousand years. It has repeatedly attempted to overthrow successive dynasties, re-emerging roughly every one to two centuries despite never succeeding in its rebellions. 52
Its teachings frame the mortal world as a place of unavoidable suffering and invoke Wusheng Laomu and a “true void homeland.” This doctrine produces intense loyalty among members; Huo Jian continues reciting its scripture even while being tortured and refuses to provide useful information. 52
Expansion in Lingbao County
The sect initially gains popular prestige through claims of healing illness with talisman water. Lu Yuan learns that poor commoners consider it benevolent, while an envoy promises Feng Yuan that the Feng Family will receive benefits once the sect's uprising succeeds. 23
Under Helm Master Li Zongming, the Taiping Sect mobilizes more than ten thousand followers to assault Iron Dragon Stockade in pursuit of a “Secret Key.” Before the attack, its forces annihilate and burn a village of roughly one hundred households. 24 25
The first siege fails to take Iron Dragon Stockade, forcing Li Zongming to retreat after severe casualties. He later returns when the stockade is weakened by internal turmoil and breaches its defenses, with Taiping Sect forces killing and burning throughout the stronghold. 29 68
Conflict with Lu Yuan
The Taiping Sect attempts to coerce the Lu Family into supplying medicinal materials. Incense Master Wang Fo threatens the family with extermination if it refuses; Lu Yuan later kills Wang Fo, triggering the sect's assault on the Lu estate. 72 75
Li Zongming personally mobilizes Lingbao County's sect forces to encircle Lu Yuan and his family. He attempts to recruit Lu Yuan, then fights him after being refused; Lu Yuan kills both Li Zongming and his son, Li Haiyang, before escaping with his family. 76 77 78 79
Li Zongming's death creates a leadership vacuum among his confidants, including Zhao Gan, who begin competing for the vacant position. 79
The sect subsequently traces Lu Yuan's disguise through the kidnapping and torture of Wang Chang, then sets an ambush using four six-time Blood Exchange experts and a seven-time Blood Exchange expert. Lu Yuan survives and kills the attackers. 82 84 85
Organization and Reach
The Taiping Sect's followers are spread across at least half of Great Sheng, while its local branches maintain informants, armed disciples, secret strongholds, and public religious operations. 25 52 76
| Rank | Jurisdiction / Function |
|---|---|
| Incense Master | Oversees sect affairs within one county. 72 |
| Branch Helm Master | Oversees three to five counties; Li Zongming held this level of authority. 72 |
| Helm Master | Oversees affairs across an entire commandery. 72 |
| Hall Master | Oversees sect affairs for a province. Theoretically one exists per province, though only around twenty are said to be active across Great Sheng. 72 |
- In Lingbao County, sect signals bring rapid reinforcements, while local yamen runners and soldiers avoid intervening against its forces. 76
- The organization’s large-scale mobilization is constrained by internal rules: Li Zongming’s unauthorized deployment of over ten thousand followers for the Secret Key could have resulted in his demotion or crippling if discovered by higher authorities. 24
- Although feared for its size, the sect is not fully cohesive; its factions and local interests can limit coordination and provoke internal power struggles. 64 79
Practices and Operations
Recruitment and public ritual
The sect uses talisman water, staged rituals, charitable activities, and fear of illness to cultivate public devotion.
- Talisman water visibly halts coughing and restores sick people within seconds, leading recipients to worship the “Holy Master.” 46 47 49
- Its representatives collect expensive “offerings” to Wusheng Laomu from desperate believers. 48
- Mr. Qingshan serves as the sect’s public face in Shuangshui County, presiding over medicine distribution, porridge relief, disaster relief, and supposed demon-subduing rituals. 56
- Mr. Qingshan’s elaborate altar ceremony relies on stacked tables, coordinated followers, and intimidation of anyone who questions the ritual. 56 57
- Lu Yuan suspects, but cannot prove, that the sect may have caused the Lingbao epidemic before using talisman water to gain followers. 47
Coercion and armed force
The sect combines promises of wealth and status with direct threats, mass violence, and military-style assaults.
- During the Iron Dragon Stockade assault, sect experts drive ordinary followers forward with promises of gold, women, and martial arts while remaining behind the front lines. 26
- Wang Fo presents the Lu Family’s forced cooperation as an “opportunity,” then threatens to uproot the family if it refuses to become a medicinal supplier. 72
- Its Lingbao forces can rapidly coordinate roadblocks, city-gate closures, signal flares, and large-scale pursuit operations. 76
- When confronted by a stronger opponent, many ordinary followers abandon their weapons and flee, demonstrating that not all members share the fanaticism of figures such as Huo Jian. 76 78
Secret strongholds and forbidden pills
A Taiping Sect stronghold in Taikang Prefecture stores substantial funds, weapons, pills, and cultivation manuals, including the Yellow Court Sensing Chapter and the Heavenly Dipper Horizontal Training Method. 44
The sect also possesses large quantities of Yin Yang Pills. After questioning Huo Jian, Lu Yuan concludes that the hundreds of pills taken from the stronghold represent the lives of hundreds or more infants whose brains were extracted for pill refinement; the pill’s exact purpose remains undisclosed. 46 51
