Background

Wang Lichuan was sent to Qinglu County by the Imperial Court and served there for two years. He sought to produce notable achievements for the county and improve its poor standing in the Martial Arts Examination, partly by recommending capable people to the court. 13 20

He belongs to an aristocratic family, specifically the Wang family of Shanghe County. 23 38

During Lu Feng’s early conflicts with the Caobang Gang, Wang Lichuan investigated the West Street attack rather than immediately accepting either Lu Feng or Li An’s account. He sentenced Li An to three years’ imprisonment and a one-thousand-tael fine, while avoiding an outright clash with County Assistant Zhou Yongsi that might have destabilized Qinglu County. 12 13

Personality

Wang Lichuan is pragmatic and politically cautious. Although he recognizes Zhou Yongsi’s harmful influence, he temporarily accommodates the County Assistant to prevent the Caobang Gang from causing wider unrest in Qinglu County. 13

New Captain Selection and Martial Arts Examination

He establishes an additional Captain position to find a suitable Qinglu County candidate for the Martial Arts Examination. After Lu Feng wins the selection, Wang Lichuan appoints him Captain, supplies cultivation resources, and personally assesses his readiness for the examination. 20 22 32 34

Bandit Suppression and Refugee Relief

Following Lu Feng’s return as a Grandmaster, Wang Lichuan supports his campaign against nearby bandit strongholds with rewards for the participating constables.
