Background / History

Rod transmigrated into the One Piece world as a young child, retaining only the name “Not Rod,” basic language ability, and knowledge gathered from short videos in his previous life. He did not inherit the memories of his original body. His earliest remembered companion was Nerl, whom he carried through the difficult years following his arrival. 2

He received two “golden fingers”: Knights Do Not Die Empty-Handed, which grants complete mastery over weapons he holds, and What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Stronger, which strengthens his body after extreme exertion or recovered near-fatal injuries. He trained himself using the Kame Style methods he remembered and gradually formed a small training group around himself. 2 10

Rather than seeking to liberate the world, Rod initially sought freedom, enjoyment, and the personal strength to never be controlled by others. His central belief was that “fist is power,” and he resolved to overturn the world’s restraints and become the person with the greatest fist. 2

Appearance

Rod is a youthful red-haired man with sharp emerald-green eyes and a lean but exceptionally powerful physique. At age eighteen, he had already become notorious across the Grand Line. 80 132

  • Messy red hair. 80
  • Emerald-green eyes, sometimes described by outsiders as blue or “azure.” 73 80
  • Usually carries captured swords and weapons, including Shusui. 194
  • Wears a pirate tricorn hat during his voyage to Alabasta. 150
  • His body can partially take on traits of the Elephant-Elephant Fruit after mastering the Elephant Sword. 211

Personality

Rod is ambitious, self-assured, and intensely committed to controlling his own life. He rejects threats against his crewmates and treats their choices as their own, notably defending Robin’s autonomy against Aokiji’s warnings. 80 129

Despite his pirate identity and willingness to kill enemies such as Jeffrey and Spandine, he is selective about violence. He spared Drake and Hina because he recognized their genuine justice, left food and water for defeated pirates, and subdued Lab without killing it. 25 66 68 136 220

He prefers to delegate management to trusted subordinates such as Nerl and Law, while personally setting broad strategic goals. His long-term objective develops from personal freedom into the pursuit of world hegemony, supported by territorial expansion, industry, intelligence networks, and powerful allies. 191 217 221 249

Abilities & Skills

Knights Do Not Die Empty-Handed

Rod’s primary cheat ability grants immediate, comprehensive control over a weapon he holds, including the techniques and experience associated with it. 2 30

  • Instantly mastered Bastille’s Shark Cutter and gained swordsmanship insights, including steel-cutting. 30
  • Replicated Onigumo’s experience with Life Return through the vice admiral’s weapon. 56
  • Can acquire mastery of Devil Fruit weapons at a deeper level, including their embedded Devil Fruit abilities. 211

  • Is known for taking the weapons of defeated opponents; Rayleigh identified this habit as part of Rod’s unusual ability. 194

What Doesn’t Kill Me Makes Me Stronger

Rod’s second cheat ability strengthens him after extreme physical strain or recovery from severe injury. He calls it “Sit-Ups.” 2

  • Improves his body following intense training and near-death combat. 2 128
  • Enhances his physical qualities broadly, including strength, speed, endurance, reaction time, and durability. 138
  • Worked in tandem with the Elephant-Elephant Fruit’s vitality to accelerate recovery during his fight with Kaido. 211
  • Does not improve his “heart” or willpower; Rod considers battle and reflection necessary to refine that aspect of himself. 138

Haki

Rod possesses all three forms of Haki and specializes in Haki-enhanced physical combat.

  • Observation Haki — Uses it for perception, combat awareness, intelligence gathering, and eventually Future Sight. 30 147 191
  • Armament Haki — Uses coating, hardening, emission, and externalized attacks; his Haki can clash without direct physical contact. 30 46 50
  • Conqueror’s Haki — Can release it with enough precision to incapacitate selected targets while sparing others. 220
  • Haki Fist techniques — Includes “Sky Rend” and “Haki Fist · Star River Reversal,” the latter producing a massive crater in Alabasta’s desert. 46 159
  • Rokuogan infused with Haki — Combines Marine Six Powers shockwaves with Haki emission. 80

Martial Arts and Marine Six Powers

Rod is primarily a close-combat fighter whose unarmed combat is stronger than his swordsmanship. 46

  • Learned and taught Soru after observing Marines use it. 27 32
  • Uses Geppo for aerial movement and combat. 68
  • Developed proficiency with the Marine Six Powers and pursued Rokuogan. 57 62 68
  • Possesses preliminary Life Return, enabling advanced control over his body and internal energy. 56

Swordsmanship

Although famed as the Haki Fist, Rod is also an elite swordsman.

  • Became capable of cutting steel after mastering Shark Cutter. 30
  • Acquired the Black Blade Autumn Water/Shusui after defeating Moria. 146 147
  • Split the sea with a single Shusui strike before Roronoa Zoro. 258
  • Was assessed as potentially capable of challenging the world’s greatest swordsman. 192

Soul-Soul Fruit

By Chapter 247, Rod was using Soul-Soul Fruit powers to manipulate soul energy. 247

  • Harvests lifespans and absorbs soul power. 247
  • Refines soul power taken from Big Mom’s Homies. 248
  • Can implant a portion of his soul into another person, as demonstrated on Smoothie. 247
  • Used soul fragments strategically on Vegapunk, intending to gain future control over him. 255

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shark Cutter — Bastille’s large saw blade; its use helped Rod awaken Armament Haki and advance his swordsmanship. 30
  • Shusui / Black Blade Autumn Water — A Twenty-One Great Sword acquired following Moria’s defeat. 146 147
  • Elephant Sword — A sword that consumed the Elephant-Elephant Fruit; Rod can access its Zoan ability through Knights Do Not Die Empty-Handed. 211
  • Katakuri’s trident — Taken after Rod’s victory over Katakuri. 191
  • Polar — The Rod Pirates’ ship. 25

Relationships

  • Nerl — Childhood companion, intelligence officer, deputy governor, and one of Rod’s right-hand men. Rod relied on Nerl’s intelligence from the crew’s earliest days. 2 191 249
  • Trafalgar Law — Trusted crewmate and deputy governor. Rod recruited Law while promising to carry his companions’ dreams and expectations. 11 249
  • Nico Robin — Crewmate and historian whom Rod recruited at Twin Cape; he consistently protects her right to choose her own path. 66 129 165
  • Catwoman Nia — Early companion and senior officer. Their interactions are often playful, including a high-five after the crew’s victory over the Marines and Donquixote Family. 2 25
  • Zephyr — Former Marine instructor and major early opponent. Their battle pushed Rod’s Rokuogan and Haki development forward. 80 84
  • Aokiji — Tested Rod’s strength and conveyed the World Government’s initial Shichibukai offer; Rod openly rejected his threat toward Robin. 129
  • Kaido — Initially fought Rod at Dressrosa, then entered a cooperative relationship involving Devil Fruit extraction and artificial Devil Fruits. 211 212 266
  • Whitebeard — Fought Rod at Urucum Island; Rod scarred Whitebeard’s face and earned recognition as a figure comparable to an Emperor. 236 238
  • Roronoa Zoro — A young swordsman Rod advised in East Blue and invited to join his forces. 258 259
  • Chopper — Friend from Drum Island; Rod later instructed Zoro to look after him until he was old enough to join the sea. 150 270
