Background / History

Nerl grew up as an orphan alongside Rod. Although they consider each other brothers, neither knows whether they are related by blood. During Rod’s difficult early years after transmigrating, the two survived together in a world shaped by piracy and violence. 2

He was also raised by Dr. Wolf alongside Rod, Law, Pekoms, and Shakky. Before the crew set sail, Nerl served as its principal intelligence gatherer, compiling notebooks on dangerous or notable figures such as Bartholomew Kuma and Catwoman Nia. 2 13

Rather than seeking to change the world himself, Nerl chose to support Rod’s ambitions completely. He considers becoming Rod’s right-hand man—whether Rod ultimately controls or destroys the world—to be his own purpose. 37

Appearance

Nerl is a long-haired, red-haired young man commonly seen carrying the Black Spear. His looks are repeatedly noted by others, including Lilika, who considers him her preferred type of “handsome guy.” 27 180

  • Red hair; described alongside Rod as having blue eyes, though one account describes his pupils as emerald. 27 31
  • Usually calm-faced and neatly presented, even in combat. 24 187
  • Carries the black long gun known as the Black Spear. 24
  • His hair rises and spreads when he channels the Goro Goro no Mi’s electricity. 173

Personality

Nerl is composed, observant, and analytical. He is rarely rattled in combat, preferring to assess an opponent’s abilities, movement patterns, and weaknesses before committing to an attack. His calculations while tracking Vander Decken demonstrate both his patience and his tendency to turn observation into precise tactical action. 24 199

His loyalty to Rod is central to his character. Nerl deliberately developed marksmanship to complement Rod’s close-range fighting, learned navigation to guide the crew’s course, and handles intelligence and internal cohesion when Rod recruits new members. 124

Despite his calm exterior, Nerl is deeply anxious about falling behind Rod’s rapid growth. This insecurity drives much of his training, his interest in Devil Fruits, and his determination not to become a burden during battles against stronger enemies. 100 104 168

He also has a dry sense of humor, frequently joining Rod and Law in teasing one another. 11 21

Abilities & Skills

Marksmanship

Nerl is the Rod Pirates’ primary sniper and uses the Black Spear with exceptional precision.

  • Uses specialized ammunition, including armor-piercing, penetrating, and explosive rounds. 24
  • Can chain shots into the same wound to bypass an opponent’s durability. 24
  • Disabled all sixteen cannons on a Marine warship and wounded Drake during the same engagement. 23
  • Maintains precision at high speed through Observation Haki-assisted targeting. 24
  • Normal bullets and Chain Shot are ineffective against sufficiently powerful Armament Haki. 100

Observation Haki

Nerl possesses unusually strong Observation Haki, specializing in detection, prediction, and long-range sensory analysis.

  • Anticipates opponents’ movements before they act, allowing him to counter Drake’s dodges and attacks. 24
  • Detects approaching ships and gauges the relative strength of individuals aboard them. 21
  • Can sense companions across an island. 125
  • After acquiring the Goro Goro no Mi, extends his sensory coverage through radio waves; his Observation Haki can cover roughly 6,000 meters. 173 199
  • Develops Future Sight by the confrontation on Whole Cake Island. 191

Armament Haki and Physical Combat

Although primarily a sniper, Nerl is capable in close quarters and has trained in the Marine Six Powers.

  • Has mastered Armament Haki and attempted to apply it directly to bullets. 41
  • Uses Soru for rapid repositioning in battle. 41
  • Defeated Deis with a headbutt after his opponent’s armor failed. 101
  • Subdued Jabra at close range and fitted him with Seastone handcuffs. 113
  • Has partially developed Life Return, improving his physique but not yet fully mastering the technique. 132
  • Cannot consistently perform Haki Flash; the timing required remains beyond his full control. 168

Goro Goro no Mi

After Enel’s defeat, Nerl consumed the Goro Goro no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that grants control over lightning. 173 187

  • Transforms his body into lightning for extreme-speed movement. 173 187
  • Uses electricity to interfere with Katakuri’s Observation Haki and create openings for attacks. 186
  • Creates Thunder Spears, condensed lightning projectiles capable of paralyzing or incapacitating targets. 186 199
  • Can regulate Thunder Spear output to avoid killing targets underwater. 199
  • Creates larger constructs such as Thunder Beast to counter wide-area attacks. 260
  • Cannot freely use elementalization underwater and must rely on protective bubbles to move as a Devil Fruit user. 199
  • His lightning is ineffective against Doll Soldiers containing transformed allies, preventing him from using indiscriminate electrical attacks in that situation. 184 185

Nerl serves as the Polar’s navigator and applies his observational skills to planning and battlefield control. 57

  • Piloted the Polar through the cloud paths of God’s Island. 172
  • Detected Lab before the Polar collided with the whale at Reverse Mountain. 65
  • Calculated Vander Decken’s likely position from the trajectories, speed, and acceleration of thrown weapons. 199
  • Coordinates crew training and pushes members to improve their individual abilities. 131
  • Oversees the Rod Pirates’ security company, which secured agreements with fifteen countries and generated an annual income of 140 billion Belly. 221

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black Spear — Nerl’s black long gun and signature weapon. Grey designed it with a ten-round capacity, improved stability, and improved accuracy. 4

  • Mobile arsenal — A cart of firearms and ammunition prepared by Grey for intercepting artillery attacks against the Polar. 52
  • Seastone — Used to weaken Enel during the battle on God’s Island. 172

  • Dr. Wolf — Guardian who raised Nerl and several future members of the Rod Pirates. 13
  • Trafalgar Law — Crewmate and frequent target of Nerl’s playful banter; the two also coordinate closely in battle. 11 21 172
  • Nia — Crewmate whose background and family influence Nerl helps explain to Rod; she trains and spars alongside him. 31 132 174
  • Grey — Fellow crewmate and supplier of Nerl’s Black Spear, mobile arsenal, and ammunition. 4 52
  • Nico Robin — Crewmate whom Nerl reassures after she joins the crew, telling her to trust Rod and the crew’s support. 90
  • Bartholomew “Big Bear” Kuma — Forms a battlefield alliance with Nerl; Bear’s Paw-Paw Fruit transports Nerl and others directly to the conflict. 125 126
  • Prince Hoshi — Ally from Ryugu Palace; after Nerl captures Vander Decken, Hoshi declares the Rod Pirates eternal friends of Fish-Man Island. 199
