Origin
Imu reveals that Devil Fruits originated from ancient technology. A device created when humanity was more technologically advanced could absorb people's thoughts, ideas, and hopes and materialize them as fruits. Eating one granted a power that had previously existed only in imagination 287.
The fruits became the subject of a dispute: some called them gifts from God, while others considered them the devil's bait. The disagreement grew into a conflict over humanity's future and ultimately led to the war of the Void Century 287 291.
Powers and Types
A fruit's power depends on the particular fruit, and its effectiveness also depends on how its user develops it 165.
- Zoan — Grants transformations and physical enhancements. Nia's Cat-Cat Fruit gives her a black-cat combat form; Zoan users are also noted for their vitality 8 177.
- Paramecia — Includes varied powers such as Gladius's ability to inflate and detonate himself or things he touches, and Mr. 5's ability to turn parts of himself into bombs 63.
- Logia — Allows users to transform into and control natural elements. Elementalization is a major combat advantage against opponents without Haki 172 231.
A sufficiently developed Devil Fruit can awaken, granting greater power. Awakening can also carry a risk of the power going out of control 111.
Weaknesses and Limits
- Seawater weakens Devil Fruit users; captives are kept submerged to prevent them from using their powers 63.
- Seastone likewise makes a user weak and prevents ability use. Haki can touch an ability user's body, but does not itself suppress the ability 172.
- Using an ability consumes stamina. Law's Isolation Room is particularly demanding to maintain 12 26.
- Eating a Devil Fruit prevents the user from swimming, a reason Minina gives for refusing one 115.
Rebirth and Acquisition
When a user dies, their Devil Fruit ability reappears in a fruit somewhere at sea. The precise mechanism is initially unknown; ordinary fruits have been observed changing into Devil Fruits 12 26.
Rod's crew develops a method to interfere with that process. Law encloses a dying user and nearby fruits inside his sealed Isolation Room. Their first attempt, with Bellamy, fails, but an apple changes into the Explosion-Explosion Fruit when Gladius dies inside the room 12 26. The method is not certain: a later attempt fails to recover Ms. Valentine's fruit, while the next succeeds with Mr. 5's Bomb Fruit 63.
Baccarat's Luck-Luck Fruit improves the crew's chances of obtaining a desired fruit. Even with her help and Law's improved Isolation Room, the Float-Float Fruit does not appear in their basket; Violet locates it nearby 115 262.
Artificial Devil Fruits
Vegapunk produces an artificial version of Kaido's Azure Dragon Fruit using his blood and Lineage Factor technology. Its dragon is pink rather than the original's color, which leads Vegapunk to label the fruit a failure despite its otherwise matching power. Rod has his sword Shusui eat it 255 257.
Rod later supplies Kaido with artificial Zoan fruits developed from Vegapunk's research by Caesar Clown and Vinsmoke Judge. They can grant Zoan abilities, but success is not guaranteed; an unsuccessful recipient gains no ability and loses an emotion 266. By the battle at Marineford, Kaido's force includes nearly 3,000 regular and artificial Zoan users 282.
