Background
Talismans are spirit items created by inscribing runes onto prepared talisman paper or other suitable carriers. They are one of the Hundred Cultivation Arts and have the lowest entry threshold among the major foundational arts, though becoming a true Talisman Master remains difficult. High-level crafting demands powerful Spiritual Sense and extremely precise spiritual-power control. 18 129
Shen Xuan relied on talisman crafting for over forty years before obtaining the Mysterious Jade Talisman. His early livelihood centered on Breath Concealing and Invisibility Talismans, while later Bloodline Talents and Dao Rhyme let him develop specialized water, poison, thunder, ice, and fire talismans. 2 3 361
His work became commercially and strategically important: High-quality talismans funded cultivation, second-order poison and thunder talismans became sought-after trade goods, and his Thunder Talismans were used during the Qingyang Prefecture Dao-Demon conflict. 3 127 314
Crafting and Quality
Standard talisman crafting uses spiritual power, a talisman brush, talisman paper, cinnabar, and—in some cases—Yao Beast blood. Shen Xuan’s Breath Concealing Talismans used cinnabar mixed with Mysterious Water Turtle blood. 3
- A cultivator’s daily output is limited by spiritual power and mental energy. At Qi Refining Level 3, Shen Xuan could attempt only twelve talismans per day before becoming exhausted. 3
- A completion rate above 30% is generally necessary for talisman production to avoid becoming a loss-making venture. 297
- Talisman quality can be assessed with a Talisman Testing Mirror. A score of 60 is passing, around 70 is good, 80 is excellent, and 90 or above is High-quality. 3 649
- High-quality talismans command significantly higher prices; Shopkeeper Ding paid double the standard price for Shen Xuan’s High-quality Breath Concealing Talismans. 3
- Second-order crafting requires strong Spiritual Sense and refined spiritual-power control; even a slight error can ruin the entire attempt. 129

Talisman Formations
Talismans can be controlled in coordinated formations rather than activated individually.
- Flying Talisman Spirit Array — Shen controlled 49 Nine Heavens Divine Thunder Talismans at once; its thunderous force could threaten Foundation Establishment cultivators. 314
- Thunder Talisman Spirit Array — An array of 81 High-quality Nine Heavens Divine Thunder Talismans could concentrate its attack on one target and was judged to have the power of a top-grade Magic Treasure. 422
- Nine Talisman Chain Formation — Yang Huofeng formed an initial chain formation with nine High-quality Fire Dragon Talismans. 650
- Fire Dragon Talisman Formation — Shen arranged 81 High-quality Fire Dragon Talismans into a formation that covered half a peak and released destructive spirit fire. 650
Precious Talismans
Precious Talismans differ from ordinary talismans by functioning similarly to nurtured Dharma Treasures. They store Dao Foundation Source Spiritual Power over time and release it in a single burst, allowing their power to surpass ordinary Dharma Treasures and potentially threaten a True Person. 198 200
- The inheritance can only be cultivated by one person. 198
- Runes are imprinted with Soul Power rather than written with a brush, making the process more than ten times harder than standard talisman crafting. 200 202
- Inferior materials may collapse under the stored Source Spiritual Power and damage the crafter’s Dao Foundation. 200
- Their power increases with continuous nurturing; a treasure talisman nurtured for a century can threaten a False Core True Person. 202 245
- Shen’s max-level Self-Healing talent rapidly restored the Source Spiritual Power absorbed by his Divine Thunder Treasure Talismans, largely offsetting their usual cultivation cost. 202
