Background / History
Founding and dominance
The Azure Cloud Sect possesses more than a thousand years of heritage and was historically Cangyun Prefecture's largest sect. It accumulated extensive industries, cultivation methods, spells, and teaching resources, while serving as the prefecture's supreme authority and protector. At the time it was first described, it was the only Cangyun Prefecture sect with a Core Formation True Person. 69 94
Its mountain gate sits on a third-tier high-grade Spirit Vein dojo. The sect also controlled the sole safe passage through the Great Marsh Mountain Range between Cangyun Prefecture and the northern prefectures. 151
The Five Great Families of Cangyun Prefecture are its vassals; their ancestors' positions within the sect underpin their status and reverence for its authority. 186
Great Marsh Mountain Range ruins
The sect's later expansion was driven by an ancient ruin or secret realm discovered in the Great Marsh Mountain Range. It raised recruitment quotas, surveyed technical personnel, increased demand for Spirit Replenishing Pills, and encouraged long-term rent payments in Golden Splendor Immortal City, indicating a major manpower and resource mobilization. 107 120
To concentrate on the excavation, the Azure Cloud Sect publicly tendered one hundred years of control over Golden Splendor Immortal City, its most stable and profitable industry. The Wan Jian Qi Family ultimately secured the lease. 120
The sect blockaded the ruins and attacked unauthorized intruders, drawing resentment from rogue cultivators and pressure from neighboring sects. After external sects forced a compromise, six sects received roughly thirty percent of the unexcavated northeastern area in exchange for compensating sixty percent of the Azure Cloud Sect's excavation costs. 149 170 172
A subsequent “Earth Dragon Overturns” sank much of the ruins and triggered formations comparable to the fourth tier. The six visiting sects suffered immense casualties, while the Azure Cloud Sect sustained comparatively light losses after already obtaining substantial gains. 183
Withdrawal and reconstruction
Following the ruins incident, clashes with the Blazing Sun Sect, and mounting pressure from rival sects, the Azure Cloud Sect announced a period of closure. It temporarily withdrew from provincial affairs to cultivate disciples and consolidate the resources gained from the ruins. 184
The sect later reopened recruitment after major wartime losses. Elder Fang, a Core Formation Middle Stage cultivator, died saving Xiao Changfeng from Corpse Puppet Sect Holy Son Lin Xiuzhu before being ambushed by the Blood Spirit Sect Master. Four False Core Elders and one of the sect's three True Core Elders had also fallen by this point. 249
Xiao Changfeng, having formed a mid-grade True Core, succeeded Elder Fang as a True Core Elder and became one of the sect's principal pillars. 246 249
Collapse of the Heavenly Azure Domain
During the wars against Qingjiang Gate and the Demonic Dao, the Azure Cloud Sect relied on its grand formation and home territory to endure prolonged attrition. It mobilized Cangyun Prefecture's families and powers under its command against Qingjiang Gate, but True Person Yunqing's existing injuries worsened during the conflict. 298
After the Myriad Law Palace fell and the Heavenly Azure Domain was occupied, the Azure Cloud Sect submitted to the Golden Puppet Saint Monarch. It retained control of its territory, but many elders and disciples fled or died. 342 353
By Li Ji'an's return, the sect had fewer than a thousand disciples remaining from its former tens of thousands. Venerable Yunqing had died in battle, many False Core Elders had perished or fled, and Elder Tian's faction had taken scarce treasury resources when escaping. 353
Li Ji'an's return and sect cleansing
Li Ji'an returned as a True Core cultivator and was received as a Supreme Elder. Xiao Changfeng transferred significant approval authority and the core token of the sect-protecting grand formation to him. 354
Li Ji'an later became the sect's decisive authority and principal backing. He publicly declared that disciples should prioritize survival outside the sect, while enemies who attacked the mountain gate would be killed without mercy. 366
When Elder Tian and two former False Core Elders attempted to return after abandoning the sect and plundering its treasury, Li Ji'an judged them as traitors and purged them in the Azure Cloud Sect's name. 389 390
Recruitment and sect discipline
Entry requirements
The Azure Cloud Sect traditionally required prospective disciples to be under fifteen years old with at least mid-grade Spiritual Roots. Applicants were also assessed for temperament and comprehension, selecting only the best candidates. 69
Its entrance trial included:
- A mountain-climbing stage with illusory paths; eighty-six of more than three hundred youths passed the first stage. 95
- Temperament testing. Li Ji'an was noted as the first participant to awaken and as having helped wake other candidates. 197
- A comprehension assessment that included questions on fields such as the Pill Dao. 97 197
Sect obligations
New disciples are required to sever ties with their past and place the sect first in life and death. Resources are earned through sect missions and contribution points rather than granted freely. 97
The sect's master-disciple hierarchy is secondary to sect membership: disciples are expected to contribute to the sect before serving an individual master. 275
Organization
| Division / Rank | Known function or representative |
|---|---|
| Sect Master | Handles the sect's internal and external administration; the position does not necessarily belong to its strongest cultivator. 249 |
| Supreme Elder | Highest senior authority. True Person Yunqing formerly held this role; Li Ji'an later returned as a Supreme Elder. 249 354 |
| True Core Elders | Core Formation pillars responsible for protecting and leading the sect; Xiao Changfeng was appointed after Elder Fang's death. 249 |
| Dan Ding Peak | Pill Dao peak associated with True Person Yudan; hosts alchemy assessments and refining facilities. 186 187 |
| Law Transmission Hall | Oversees trial-related matters and cultivation instruction; Zhao Qi served as acting head. 197 |
| Internal Affairs Hall | Coordinates the sect's departments and contracts with personnel such as Guest Elders. 187 197 |
| Law Enforcement Hall | Handles enforcement and patrols; its deterrence was emphasized during the sect's reconstruction. 249 |
| Formation Breaking Peak | Home to one of the sect's few third-tier specialists, an elder proficient in formations. 197 |
| True Disciples | Elite disciples qualified to access the sect's foundational cultivation methods and compete in high-level trials. 246 287 |
| Guest Elders | External specialists contracted for their skills without necessarily becoming formal disciples. 187 |
Cultivation Inheritances and Resources
- Azure Water Scripture — The sect's highest-level known Water-element cultivation method, ranked Earth-grade high-grade; it is available only to suitably qualified disciples. 246
- True Disciple cultivation methods — Earth-grade low-tier methods of multiple elemental attributes, sufficient to support attempts at Core Formation. 287
- Sect-protecting formation — A defensive grand formation capable of resisting two True Core True Humans when supported by the sect's Spirit Vein. 353
- Identity jade tokens — Official tokens are imprinted with the sect-protecting artifact. When activated, they can emit late Core Formation Spirit pressure to deter weaker cultivators. 187
- Golden Splendor Immortal City — Formerly a major source of income and a tool for controlling Cangyun Prefecture's trade; its hundred-year administration lease was transferred during the ruins mobilization. 120
- Core Formation resources — The sect traditionally grants a set of Core Formation Spiritual Resources to disciples attempting Core Formation, with the quality depending on the treasury's reserves. 251
