Organization and Hierarchy

The Wanbao County division is headed by a General Banner, with six Small Banners beneath them. Each Small Banner commands six Demon Suppression Captains; each Captain commands six regular officers, while each regular officer has four White Officers. The Wanbao County Death Row is underground, accessed through a stone chamber and a three-zhang passage. A bed crossbow guards the inner passage, making a direct breach difficult; its previous fall was attributed to an inside traitor. 79

Background and History

The Demon Suppression Division formerly suppressed Demonic Creatures across the entire Great Zhou Dynasty. By the beginning of the story, it is increasingly overwhelmed and unable to fully contain the growing darkness beneath the dynasty. 1

Wanbao County's division suffers a manpower shortage severe enough that it expands recruitment, allowing Chen Bin's former self to purchase a regular-officer post for one hundred taels of silver. 1 Its officers nevertheless remain active against ghouls, fox demons, tiger demons, and other threats throughout the county. 3 6 18

Following the Nanxi Village incident and subsequent demon outbreaks, the Division retreats from the mountain area after Captain Tian Jie and his team are killed. Chen Bin's reported slaying of a Jade Marrow Realm Tiger Demon earns him promotion to Captain. 15 The Division later defeats the Tiger Demons around Ertang Village and returns to Wanbao County with both demon and officer corpses in a deliberate public display of victory. 38

The Wanbao branch faces an internal crisis when Captain He Yang is exposed as a mole who collaborates with black-clad attackers to free four Demon Persons from Death Row. The attack exploits the Division's depleted defenses while much of its elite strength is away on missions. 54 The Division subsequently purges Demon God Cult collaborators from Wanbao County, including County Magistrate Lu Hanwen and City Defense Commander Qian Yu. 60 62 83

During the Mountain Lord's assault, the Wanbao headquarters is besieged by a demon horde and heavily damaged; numerous officers are killed defending the compound and its Death Row. 79 80 A later explosion destroys the headquarters, though the Division survives and continues its operations. 83 88

In Dongyang Prefecture, the Division clashes politically with the Prefect's office while investigating demonic infiltration. Its intelligence network uncovers that a Demonic Cult member had entered Prefect Zhuang Chengping's household years earlier. 102 107 The Dongyang branch later suffers another major infiltration when disguised Demonic Creatures kill and betray several of its experts during Operation Blood Sacrifice. 237

The organization remains active across Donglin Prefecture and Chuzhou, coordinating city defenses, purging infiltrators, mobilizing Martial Artists, and responding to large-scale demonic invasions. 266 276 350 351

Its methods are often severe. During demon-exorcism operations, officers clear nearby residences by force, warning civilians that remaining in the area may be fatal. 62 Its authority also provokes conflict with the County Office, City Defense Division, noble families, merchant groups, and martial sects. 47 102 276
