Background

Zhang Yeye is publicly known as Cao'er, the child of Nanxi Village's clan leader. Zhang He recognizes her after she awakens at the Demon Suppression Division and reunites with her in Wanbao County 143.

Although she initially presents herself as a timid young child, Zhang Yeye conceals an abnormal connection to souls. She admits that she and the other children rescued by Chen Bin can speak, but avoids doing so because she fears saying the wrong thing while playing with them. The children's souls reside under her control, while the Mountain Lord's soul—whom she calls “Little Tiger”—has made peace with her and can protect her 144.

Her true nature gradually emerges after she absorbs increasingly powerful souls. Zhang Yeye later explains that she has recovered some memories and is a reincarnated cultivator who has wandered through countless cycles of reincarnation. The Demon-Slaying Mirror subsequently reveals an image of a dark-robed woman standing upon a Xuan Bird; the White Jade Capital Daoists address her as Senior Xuan Nu 339 380.

Zhang Yeye is initially fearful, soft-spoken, and strongly dependent on Chen Bin, whom she calls “Big Brother.” She is frightened by unfamiliar people and by the souls gathering around her, but trusts Chen Bin enough to reveal her abilities and obey his warnings to conceal them 144 176.

She nevertheless shows courage when threatened. During her abduction by the Demon God Cult, she resists being made their Saintess, attacks Master Feile with her Dragon Souls, and repeatedly tries to escape despite fear and injury 300 301.

As her memories return, she becomes more composed, knowledgeable, and occasionally playful. She remains protective of Chen Bin and his companions, but her mature understanding of soul cultivation and ancient history contrasts sharply with her youthful appearance 339 343 394.
