Background / History

Sasuke is the surviving Uchiha child shaped by the destruction of his clan. From his first introduction, he states that he intends to restore the Uchiha and personally kill the man responsible, later identified as his elder brother, Uchiha Itachi. His initial one-tomoe Sharingan awakened on the night of the massacre, though it lay dormant for years. 9 24

Under Cangwu's instruction, Sasuke learns that Naruto's mother and his own mother, Mikoto, were close, and that an Uchiha using a single Mangekyo Sharingan released the Nine-Tails. Cangwu later subjects Sasuke to a genjutsu that forces him to relive the massacre, awakening his two-tomoe Sharingan. 54

The truth surrounding the massacre eventually surfaces: Danzō admits to ordering Itachi to wipe out the Uchiha clan and regrets that Sasuke survived. Cangwu then sends Sasuke into the Tsukuyomi world to witness further details of the tragedy, including Shisui's death and Itachi accepting the mission; the experience awakens Sasuke's Mangekyo Sharingan. 180 181 184

Sasuke initially presents himself as cold, proud, and dismissive—particularly toward Naruto, whom he repeatedly calls a “dead last.” His pride is closely tied to his Uchiha identity, and Naruto's rapid progress repeatedly provokes jealousy and impatience. 19 23 24

Despite this outward hostility, Sasuke observes Naruto's training, learns from his methods, and gradually accepts the value of cooperation.
