Background / History
Di Xin awakens as King Zhou shortly after Su Daji, a thousand-year-old fox spirit, enters the palace. Knowing the original king's fate in the Investiture of the Gods, he concludes that abandoning the throne would not save him and decides that cultivation, concealment, and survival must take priority. He receives a System that presents decisive choices and rewards him with cultivation resources, techniques, and artifacts. 1 2
To avoid alerting hostile Daoist forces, Di Xin deliberately preserves the image of an absurd and debauched ruler while quietly gathering Heavenly Materials, Earthly Treasures, Spirit Pills, and cultivation knowledge. At the same time, he recognizes Daji's identity and keeps her close rather than openly confronting her, using his apparent indulgence to conceal his vigilance. 3 9 10
His public conduct gradually changes as he reduces taxes, cancels the Deer Terrace, curbs palace expenses, and assists Xi Qi during famine. These decisions increase Yin Shang's national Fortune and undermine attempts to portray Shang as an irredeemably tyrannical regime. 161 163 213 219
Outside the palace, Di Xin adopts several identities to cultivate allies and disrupt enemies. As the Daoist “Wu Yazhi,” he accepts Ji Chang as a disciple, later takes Bo Yikao, Ji Fa, Xin Mian, and others under his instruction, and uses his influence in Xi Qi to oppose Chan Sect plans for rebellion. 173 190 191 318
Personality
Di Xin is intensely survival-driven. He is willing to humiliate himself, act foolish, flatter powerful figures, or maintain contradictory identities when doing so improves his chances against the Chan Sect, Goddess Nuwa, and the fate awaiting the original King Zhou. 3 44 215
He is calculating and frequently deceptive, especially when cultivating political leverage. He manipulates Ji Chang's trust, builds disciples within Xi Qi, and uses disguises to separate his actions as a cultivator from his authority as the King of Yin Shang. 184 190 318 351
Despite his self-preserving pragmatism, Di Xin repeatedly shows concern for Yin Shang's people and those he considers his responsibility. He reduces taxes, cancels costly construction, seeks stable rainfall, protects Long'er, and acts against the seventy-two rebellious lords. 161 163 193 293 351
