Bond and Cultivation
A cultivator must feed their Companion and provide the resources it needs to grow. Losing the Companion can sever the cultivator's path to immortality; Companions can therefore become targets for theft or consumption by another Companion 7 10.
The bond changes with cultivation. Spirit Channeling emphasizes communication, while Spirit Refining requires the cultivator to control the Companion 309. Excessive control has a cost: Li Shuidao's treatment of his Jade Toad as a near-lifeless tool threatens the vitality and Inner Scenery needed for a later breakthrough 377.
