Background / History

Jiraiya trained under Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade. After Orochimaru’s defection, he spent years tracking him and eventually offered to settle the threat personally during the preparations for Konoha’s invasion 99 159.

During a war, Jiraiya taught Nagato and his companions ninjutsu so they could survive. Nagato’s Rinnegan led him to believe that the boy might be the Great Toad Sage’s Child of Prophecy. He later learned that Nagato had become Akatsuki’s leader and that Danzō had helped Hanzō ambush the earlier organization, killing Yahiko and leaving Nagato and Konan as its survivors 266 267.

Jiraiya also taught Minato. On one mission, the pair were intercepted by Rōshi and Han, the Four-Tails and Five-Tails jinchūriki; Jiraiya remembered the encounter as extremely dangerous. His later responsibility for Naruto connects him to both generations of Minato’s family 185.

His travels took him across the ninja world for decades. Hiruzen described his whereabouts as uncertain because he remained away from Konoha year-round, while his association with Mount Myōboku gave him access to its sages, prophecies, and extensive intelligence network 8 109 247.

Appearance

Jiraiya has long white hair and wears a red outer robe with a forehead protector bearing the character for “oil” 139 159.

  • Height: Stands approximately a head taller than twelve-year-old Shinichi during their first meeting 106.
  • Sage Mode features: Dark eyeshadow and toad-like warts along the bridge of his nose 208.
  • Combat arrangement: Fukasaku and Shima perch on his shoulders when assisting his Sage Art techniques 208 303.

Personality

Jiraiya is boisterous, teasing, and openly lecherous. He spies on women through a telescope while calling it research for his writing, complains dramatically when interrupted, and enjoys embarrassing Shinichi over Ino’s interest in him. He also habitually enters offices through windows, declaring that using the front door is no fun 107 157 158 247.

His frivolous behavior gives way quickly when prophecy or his students’ safety is involved. A summons from the Great Toad Sage immediately silences his complaints, and the prospect of Naruto facing an overwhelming future threat makes him reassess his preference for gradual training 107 203 204.

He is loyal without being uncritical. He reassures Hiruzen that protecting Shinichi was the right decision, but challenges Shinichi’s refusal to warn other villages about Akatsuki. Although dissatisfied with the explanation, he ultimately accepts the trust that Konoha’s leadership places in his junior fellow disciple 159 247 248.

Abilities & Skills

Sage Mode

Jiraiya gathers Natural Energy to enter Sage Mode with assistance from Fukasaku and Shima 205 208.

  • Requires a prolonged preparation period; he contrasts this with Shinichi’s almost instantaneous activation 205 208.
  • Must concentrate on gathering and balancing Natural Energy, making distractions a problem during preparation 208.
  • Uses the completed transformation against the Nine-Tails and later against Madara 208 303.

Combined Sage Art Attacks

Jiraiya coordinates his techniques with the two toad sages to produce large-scale elemental attacks.

  • Sage Art: Gōremu: Combines Jiraiya’s Fire Release, Fukasaku’s Wind Style, and Shima’s Oil Release into a sea of fire spanning nearly a hundred meters, directed at the Nine-Tails 208.
  • Sage Art: Fire Release: Toad Oil Flame: Meets Madara’s Majestic Destroyer Flame head-on. The collision disperses the poisonous pollen covering the battlefield and gives the allied fighters a brief opening 303.

Toad Summoning

His connection to Mount Myōboku supports both combat and specialized assistance.

  • Fights from atop Gamabunta during the Konoha Collapse Plan 121.
  • Summons Gamatora to open Naruto’s Eight Trigrams Seal for the Nine-Tails training attempt 204 205.
  • Works with Fukasaku and Shima for Sage Mode and combined attacks 208 303.
  • Travels to Mount Myōboku through Reverse Summoning; he also accompanies Shinichi there to meet the Great Toad Sage 107 154.

Rasengan and Ninjutsu Knowledge

Jiraiya is among the confirmed practitioners of the Rasengan 8.

  • Recognizes Shinichi’s Wind Release: Rasenshuriken as an evolution of the technique and identifies its dangerous recoil 210.
  • Recognizes the demanding spatial perception and precise chakra control needed for Flying Thunder God when Kakashi demonstrates it 235.
  • Identifies Shinichi’s fusion of Water, Earth, and Yang Release as a Kekkei Tōta rather than ordinary Wood Release 210.

Intelligence Gathering

Jiraiya’s intelligence network extends beyond Konoha through Mount Myōboku’s toads and their summoning network 247.

  • Receives prompt news of Gaara’s capture by Akatsuki 247.
  • Has accumulated information about Akatsuki through decades of travel 139.
  • Evaluates enemy capabilities and warns Shinichi about Orochimaru’s numerous survival methods 110.
  • Shinichi judges that, with sufficient information, he could escape an encounter with Akatsuki’s leader unharmed, though winning alone would be difficult 266.

Equipment / Items

  • Telescope — Used to spy on women while gathering supposed “artistic material” 107.
  • Kunai and ninja tool pouch — Uses a kunai to test the hardness and regeneration of Shinichi’s evolved Wood Release 210.
  • “Oil” forehead protector — Part of his recognizable attire 139.

Relationships

  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Teacher, addressed as “Old Man.” Jiraiya helps him recover confidence after Danzō’s downfall and agrees to a contest over whose disciple develops better 99 159.
  • Uzumaki Naruto — Student and traveling companion. Jiraiya advocates giving him experience outside Konoha, promises to protect him, and later escorts him toward Sage Art and jinchūriki training 129 185 268.
  • Minato — Former student. Jiraiya recalls their dangerous joint mission and is deeply moved by the safeguard Minato left within Naruto’s seal 185 204 206.
  • Tejima Shinichi — Junior fellow disciple under Hiruzen. Initial concern about his rapid rise becomes admiration; Jiraiya remains an adviser willing to question his decisions 106 110 247 248.
  • Tsunade — Fellow former student of Hiruzen. Their exchanges mix familiar banter with serious concern, particularly when she demands that both Jiraiya and Naruto return safely 129 159 185.
  • Orochimaru — Former fellow student and long-pursued threat. Jiraiya initially intends to end his path himself before Shinichi takes responsibility for confronting him 99 106 110.
  • Nagato and Konan — Former pupils whose involvement in Akatsuki burdens him with regret. Shinichi persuades him not to act on the assumption that they remain the children he remembers 266 267.
  • Gamamaru, the Great Toad Sage — Source of the prophecy guiding his search for the Child of Prophecy and his concern about the ninja world’s future 107 108 203.
  • Fukasaku and Shima — Mount Myōboku sages, Sage Mode assistants, and combat partners; they also tease and scold him 107 154 208.

  • Meets Shinichi personally, questions whether his rise is too rapid, and comes to respect his practical determination to resolve Orochimaru’s threat and become Hokage 106.

  • Suspects Sasuke may be the prophecy’s second young companion after observing his changed behavior toward Naruto and Itachi 140.

Battle Against the Revived Madara

  • Arrives with Naruto among Konoha’s assembled Kage-level fighters 302.
  • Restrains Naruto when he tries to rush to Sasuke’s rescue, warning that fighting Madara without Sage Mode would be fatal 302.
