Background / History

The Great Elder built enough influence within the Zhang Family to effectively reserve a Heavenly Fist Sect admission quota for his son, Zhang Yuntang. Clan members understood that competing for the position was dangerous, and nominal contestants were drawn from the Great Elder's own faction. 12

Years earlier, he was determined to secure the same quota for Zhang Yuntang. A Zhang Family genius who surpassed his son died under suspicious circumstances, while the genius's relatives also died mysteriously. 1 He later acknowledged that Zhang Yunhao's parents had been “restless” and implied that he should have eliminated Zhang Yunhao as well. 13

After Zhang Yuntang's defeat and crippling, the Great Elder revealed his involvement in the disappearance of Zhang Yunhao's parents, causing Zhang Yunhao to seek revenge against him. 27

The Great Elder is ruthless, controlling, and intensely devoted to Zhang Yuntang's advancement. He views any obstacle to his son's future as something to be removed, and he is willing to spend favors, negotiate political support, arrange assassinations, and openly violate competition rules to protect him. 13 22 23

He has little regard for fairness or accountability. When Zhang Yunhao defeated Zhang Yuntang despite interference, the Great Elder attempted to kill him, falsely accused him of Demonic Sect ties, and pushed for his capture. 24 25 Zhang Yuntang's crippling ultimately drove him into a rage severe enough that he lost his reason and attacked Zhang Yunhao directly. 27

The Great Elder dominates the Zhang Family's competition for entry into the Heavenly Fist Sect, treating the quota as Zhang Yuntang's predetermined possession. He has already arranged the outcome and considers Zhang Yunhao an obstacle to be eliminated. 12 13

Assassination Attempt on Zhang Yunhao

After Zhang Yunhao registers for the competition, the Great Elder's side sends Black Eagle and Iron Eagle to Ming Cui Mountain to kill him. The Great Elder dismisses Zhang Yunhao as a newly advanced and insignificant threat. 13 14

Competition Interference

When Zhang Yuntang begins losing, the Great Elder secretly uses Ghost Thunder Sound to disrupt Zhang Yunhao, allowing his son to injure him. After Zhang Yunhao still wins, he attempts a sneak attack and falsely labels Zhang Yunhao a Demonic Sect member. 23 24

Downfall of His Plans

Lei Nu prevents the Great Elder from killing Zhang Yunhao and warns the Zhang Family against harming a Demon Extermination Alliance member. 25 26 Zhang Yunhao then destroys Zhang Yuntang's dantian, prompting the Great Elder to reveal his connection to Zhang Yunhao's parents' disappearance in his fury. 27
