The gym's air was torn apart by a sudden shout.
"Spinning—Lightning—!!"
Nishinoya Yū's figure darted into position like a streak of orange lightning. Facing the volleyball hurtling down at high speed, he didn't use a conventional shuffle step. Instead, he launched into an extremely exaggerated sideways roll across the floor.
His rubber soles screeched against the floor. The instant he finished rolling, he dropped to one knee and held his arms steady. The volleyball smacked against his forearms with a thump and bounced up perfectly.
The move flowed seamlessly, ending in a pose with his arms spread and his eyes sharp.
The entire gym fell silent.
Two seconds later.
"Pfft."
Someone let out a laugh, and the next moment, the gym erupted. The laughter nearly lifted the roof.
"Wahahahaha! What was that, Noya!" Tanaka Ryūnosuke clutched his stomach and slapped the floor, tears streaming down his face. "That was just a regular rolling receive! Why did you have to shout? What the heck is 'Spinning Lightning' supposed to mean?!"
Tsukishima Kei stood on the other side of the net, covering his mouth as his shoulders shook like a sieve. Beside him, Yamaguchi Tadashi was laughing so hard his face had turned red, letting out a series of breathless giggles.
"Shut up!" Nishinoya's face flushed bright red, but he clearly didn't think he'd done anything wrong. Instead, he pointed indignantly at the ones laughing hardest. "What do you know? It's all about spirit! Do you understand? Spirit!"
He whipped around and saw Kageyama Tobio standing nearby, staring at him with a blank expression.
"Hey! Kageyama! What's with that look?"
Kageyama blinked. His stone-faced expression was filled with nothing but confusion. "I... was just wondering if shouting makes your receive more successful."
"Pfft! Hahahaha!" Tanaka laughed even louder.
