Nature and Terminology
Blood Food is the city term for Taisui, a vast, living-seeming mass of flesh that emerges from the earth. One such manifestation appears as a bloody, swollen mass pressing out from a rift in the ground; villagers call it Lord Tai Sui, while city dwellers call its harvestable flesh Blood Food 12.
Its origin and properties remain poorly understood even by experienced traders and miners. Hu Ma notes that Taisui remains living year after year despite being cut apart and consumed, while its different flesh varieties can strengthen bodies, heal injuries, or nourish the soul 363.
Much later, Hu Ma identifies Blood Food as Taisui’s body forced into the human world, treating it as food before Taisui’s consciousness can fully descend 832.
Appearance
Lord Tai Sui resembles an enormous, bloated mass of bloody flesh emerging from a fissure in the earth 12. Harvested Blood Food may be eaten raw, cooked, cured, or refined into pills 103 521.
- Black Taisui is dark-colored and saturated with harmful influence 13.
- White Taisui is pale and grows on the sun-facing side of a flesh mountain 13.
- Green Taisui and Blood Ganoderma are more valuable edible portions 13.
- Blood Food whose essence has been drained becomes pale, wood-like residue that can resemble White Ganoderma 413.
- Some rare flesh displays golden patterns or a golden aura 103 301 372.
Varieties
| Variety | Characteristics | Known Effects / Value |
|---|---|---|
| Black Taisui | Dark flesh, generally avoided despite being harvestable 13 | Can turn consumers into Evil Spirits, cause madness, illness, death, or other afflictions 13 |
| White Taisui | Pale, sun-facing flesh 13 | Safe to eat; strengthens the body and is more nourishing than grain 13 |
| Green Taisui / Green Ganoderma | A superior, relatively common harvestable type 13 | Cures illness and prolongs life; a small daily portion can sustain an injured person for a day 13 120 |
| Blood Ganoderma | Rarer than Green Ganoderma; takes three years to regrow after harvest 13 | Extremely valuable and scarce; refined pills may sell for thirty taels of silver during shortages 13 121 |
| Golden Silk Taisui | Flesh containing fine golden threads 301 | Used to treat soul damage 301 |
| Golden Jade Paste | Golden-patterned Blood Food discovered in rare ore veins 372 | A rare material with uses distinct from ordinary Blood Taisui 103 372 |
| Purple Taisui | Associated with an unusually active Blood Food mine beneath the Imperial Capital 816 | Purple-tainted Blood Food Pills can restore dao cultivation, though a small amount of purple energy showed no clear benefit to Hu Ma’s Natal Spirit Temple 645 |

Harvesting and Handling
Blood Food does not regenerate immediately after cutting. White and Green Taisui can be harvested from particular areas of a flesh mountain, while Blood Ganoderma requires three years to regrow after a harvest 13.
- Blood Food mines are guarded and managed by Blood Food Gangs; production, accounts, and rare harvests are closely contested 370 376.
- Blood Food attracts Evil Spirits, making warehouses and transport convoys vulnerable to attacks 55.
- Large quantities cannot reliably be moved through ordinary magical transportation methods; gangs instead use guarded carts and escorts 77 516.
- Ghost Envoys normally become crazed around Blood Food and may consume what they carry, making Xiao Hong Tang’s ability to deliver Green Food unusual 120.
- The Red Lantern Society stores Blood Food in sealed vats protected by blood talismans and guarded personnel 116.
- The Altar Cult uses human-skin bags to preserve Blood Food without leaking its scent for up to a year 116.
- Blood Food can be drained by powerful entities. After the Yin General emerged from the mine, Blood Ganoderma, Green Ganoderma, and other varieties lost their essence and withered 413.

- Blood Ganoderma becomes especially costly during poor harvest years, when even wealthy buyers compete for refined pills 121.
- Although it is commonly treated as food and merchandise, Hu Ma considers Taisui flesh and blood the most bizarre thing in the world 363.
