Background / History

Xuan Zi was a slovenly but formidable elder of Shrek Academy’s Sea God Pavilion, known for constantly eating chicken legs. When Beibei reported Huo Hao’s Eye of Sanction—capable of restraining a Mandala Snake for half a second even before obtaining a Soul Ring—Xuan Zi immediately decided that Shrek could not lose such a talent. He rushed to find Huo Hao, intending to help him obtain a four-hundred-year Soul Ring and recruit him into the academy. 6

His recruitment attempt failed. Xuan Zi introduced himself with the authority of a Taotie Douluo and offered Shrek’s resources, but Huo Hao refused. Xuan Zi responded violently, pursuing the three Huo brothers into the mysterious river. 7

The river subsequently produced Righteous Qi Xuan Zi and Evil Qi Xuan Zi, leaving the original Xuan Zi caught in a three-way battle. Although all three were Super Douluos, the original was inferior to both counterparts and was heavily injured while Righteous Qi Xuan Zi suppressed the other two. 8 9

After later losing the use of his legs, Xuan Zi continued serving Shrek from a wheelchair. His reckless handling of an expedition to the mysterious river contributed to the loss of four elite academy students; Yan Shaozhe openly held him accountable, while Xuan Zi blamed the Crimson King, Lin Feng, and even choking on a chicken leg. 22 26 32

Abandoned during the confrontation with the Crimson King, Xuan Zi washed ashore injured and encountered Mu Xuan. Faced with death or service, he joined the Holy Spirit Sect after Mu Xuan healed him, including restoring his legs. Xuan Zi privately framed his submission as an attempt to infiltrate the sect and expose its plans to Shrek Academy. 33

Once restored, Xuan Zi sought revenge against Er Ming for humiliating him. His confidence proved misplaced: even with his Level 98 strength, Taotie True Body, and full Soul Ring configuration, Er Ming shattered his attack and defeated him in two blows. 53 54

Xuan Zi survived the later battle around Mu Xuan only by hiding in a crater and “strategically playing dead.” Still badly injured, he attempted to pressure Feng Ling into joining Shrek Academy and abandoning Zhongli Wu. Feng Ling refused, later defeating Xuan Zi in two moves and sending him into a mysterious puddle. 97 118

Xuan Zi later emerged as one of the three consciousnesses fused into Yu Xuan San, alongside Tang San and Yu Xiaogang. Within the Level 99 fused body, he ridiculed the other two souls and repeatedly fought them for control; when Tang San sought revenge on Zhou Yi, Xuan Zi temporarily took control to stop him. 140 141

Xuan Zi is an elderly, burly man whose casual appearance sharply contrasts with his status as a Super Douluo. He is usually seen disheveled and eating chicken legs. 6 7

His initial interest in Huo Hao comes from genuine recognition of talent, but he approaches recruitment with condescension and turns hostile when refused. 6 7

He is deeply attached to Shrek Academy and considers threats to it intolerable, particularly Evil Qi Xuan Zi. However, this loyalty is undermined by poor judgment, volatility, and a frequent refusal to accept responsibility for his mistakes. 17 26 32

His love of chicken legs is both a defining habit and a serious weakness: he continues eating during crises, cannot properly account for events after being struck by Er Ming, and even prioritizes securing his food supply after surviving a catastrophic battle. 22 26 97
