Poisoning and engagement

Gu Lan lived with her younger brother, Gu Bei, while suffering from an illness that left her meridians blocked and her body weakened. Xian He identified the cause as a concealed poison and offered her the divine sword Mo Nü Yi, whose detoxification ability could cure her if she recognized it as her weapon. 180 181

In return, Xian He demanded marriage. Gu Lan accepted only on the condition that he help Gu Bei become the Gu Clan's patriarch, and later explicitly prohibited improper behavior before that condition was fulfilled. 180 181 Despite Gu Bei's objections, she allowed Xian He to remain in their courtyard, reasoning that his wealth, weapons, and promise of support could secure her brother's future. 181

Conflict over Gu Bei

When Nie Yu permanently crippled Gu Bei after Xian He asked her to “teach him a lesson,” Gu Lan vowed revenge on Xian He. 188 She confronted him over his involvement, attacked him with Mo Nü Yi, and remained focused on protecting Gu Bei even after Xian He explained that he had not ordered the full extent of Nie Yu's violence. 199

Xian He then led Gu Lan outside the Feather God Sect's range, where her connection to the Hall of Souls would not allow her to revive if killed. He attempted to assault her; Gu Lan escaped into the island's rainforest rather than submit. 199 Their pursuit attracted the Seven-Colored Dragon Lizard and its pack, forcing Gu Lan to rely on Xian He and his allies for survival. 200 201

During the crisis, Xian He kissed Gu Lan. She revealed that on her sixteenth birthday she had sworn to marry the man who took her first kiss, but resolved to leave forgiveness and the final decision on marriage to Gu Bei. 200

Life at the Hao Xie Divine Pool

After the lizard incident, Gu Lan learned that Xian He had nearly ten thousand wives and a vast number of children; the revelation caused her to faint. 202 Xian He returned Mo Nü Yi to her, but warned her never to use it against his wives or children. 202

Gu Lan later attempted to escape repeatedly from Xian He's territory. During one escape attempt, she knocked out a young girl assigned to watch her, leading Xian He to capture and punish her. 203 Despite this conflict, she retained concern for Gu Bei and eventually accepted twenty pieces of Spirit Stone Essence from Xian He before Goddess Yu Yan escorted her back to the Feather God Sect. 207

Upon returning home, Gu Lan found Gu Bei injured, isolated, and betrayed by his concubines. She cared for him, concealed her continued connection to Xian He by claiming she had crippled him and seized the Spirit Stone Essence as spoils, and gained Gu Bei's support for her own bid to become Gu Clan patriarch. 210 211 Her recovery subsequently alarmed Gu Heng, who began planning to poison her again to preserve his own claim as first heir. 212

Gu Lan was initially pale and gaunt from the poison obstructing her meridians, but her complexion visibly improved after Mo Nü Yi began detoxifying her. 180 181 202

She calls him her only family, risks conflict with Xian He to seek revenge for him, tends to him after his injuries, and lies about defeating Xian He to preserve Gu Bei's confidence. 199 211 Even when frightened by Xian He's power and household, she remains determined to return home and protect her brother. 202 210
