History

War with Sunagakure

Iwagakure initially outnumbered Sunagakure's forces by two or three to one and possessed two Tailed Beasts and two kekkei genkai. Yunqing nevertheless inflicted heavy losses on its forces before ordering Sunagakure's withdrawal. Second Tsuchikage Mu and his disciple Ōnoki watched the Sand forces retreat from a battlefield where Iwagakure held only a narrow advantage 1 2.

After Sunagakure left the Second Ninja World War, its agreement to blockade the sea kept Kirigakure occupied and freed Iwagakure troops to pressure Konoha and Kumogakure. Konoha also attacked Iwagakure over a betrayal during negotiations 11.

The Land of Waterfalls

Ōnoki and Hiruzen Sarutobi later led their armies into the Land of Waterfalls. Konoha overran Takigakure and broke through Iwagakure's deployment. Rōshi's Four-Tails transformation slowed the offensive, but after ten days Iwagakure was driven out of the country 142 145.

Iwagakure suffered severe wartime losses and remained poor during its recovery. Ōnoki and Rōshi subsequently investigated and eliminated turncoats within the village 151 183.

Expansion and cooperation

To improve the Land of Earth's environment, Iwagakure considered diverting water for irrigation. Under Ōnoki, it also offered houses, land, and roads to encourage settlement in newly built villages. These connected communities formed a foundation centered on Iwagakure 125 174.

When maritime opportunities became clear, Ōnoki ordered the nation's timber reserves mobilized and demanded a fleet within a month. He authorized obtaining missing timber from smaller countries and seeking shipbuilding expertise from Kirigakure 306. Iwagakure later offered high-quality minerals in the hidden villages' resource-sharing discussions 482.

Iwagakure joined the other great hidden villages in establishing the United Hidden Village. Its personnel participated in the joint operation in the Land of Fields, and the new village's research teams drew talent from the member villages 469 471.

Military Strength

• Specialties — Earth Release is identified as Iwagakure's characteristic ninjutsu system. Its forces also include Dust Release, Explosion Release, and other kekkei genkai 191 336.
• Tailed Beasts — The village possesses two. Rōshi fights as the Four-Tails' jinchūriki, and a Five-Tails jinchūriki is later reported among its rising forces 1 145 436.
• Research — Following the Kage Summit, Ōnoki secured the Four-Tails' cooperation in research by agreeing to erect a statue in its honor 77.
• Later generation — Konoha's assessment identifies Akatsuchi's Earth Release, Ōnoki's gifted granddaughter, and the Five-Tails jinchūriki as signs of Iwagakure's growing strength 436.
