Background / History

Born into a Houndoom pack near a volcano, Houndour was ostracized for refusing to embrace the cruelty expected of him. He would not harm bird Pokémon for training, secretly released one he had been ordered to mutilate, and was bullied by his packmates—including his siblings—for his kindness. The pack leader also targeted him because his growing bone plates could one day surpass the leader's son's horns. 438

During his hundred-day ceremony, Houndour defeated an Ekans but refused to kill it, choosing exile over conformity. He left the pack gravely wounded and was taken in by an elderly, lame Houndoom. The elder taught him how to hunt, urged him to follow his heart, and suggested that he might be better suited to living alongside humans. The elder later sacrificed itself to protect Houndour, reinforcing his resolve to remain kind. 439

Houndour wandered into a human city, surviving on discarded food while deliberately refusing to claim territory that other strays needed. When an Alolan Persian and its Meowth followers attacked him for his small resting place, he fought back with Ember, Smog, and Bite despite being severely outmatched. 102 He ultimately defeated Persian by poisoning it with Smog and using Comeback. 103

Qing Mu found the injured Houndour, treated him, and recruited him. Houndour accepted out of a desire for belonging, then evolved into Houndoom through Qing Mu's training. Although Qing Mu was physically abusive and demanded greater ruthlessness, Houndoom remained compassionate toward captured Pokémon, secretly sharing food with them and refusing to harm weaker targets unnecessarily. 103 104

Houndoom's loyalty to Qing Mu persisted even after being abandoned. During the operation to capture Raikou, he shielded Qing Mu from a potentially fatal Hydro Pump and was later healed by Entei's Sacred Fire. 104 After Azure's forces beat and imprisoned him, Qing Mu abandoned the injured Houndoom in snowy wilderness, leaving him emotionally devastated and without the will to live. 106 107

Pikachu, Togepi, and their allies found Houndoom near death and brought him to Yan Yang. Entei stabilized him with Sacred Fire, and Yan Yang captured him so he could be treated. Yan Yang later entered Houndoom's inner world with Evergreen Power, confronted his trauma, and persuaded him to awaken. Houndoom became part of Yan Yang's family. 98 99 102 107 108

Appearance

Houndoom is a large black canine Pokémon with crimson eyes, smooth short fur, prominent horns, white bone-like structures along his body, and rings on all four legs. His thin tail is notably unlike the thicker, furrier tails of some of Yan Yang's other Pokémon. 318

  • Large, backward-curving horns; horn size and curvature are associated with eligibility for Houndoom pack leadership. 385
  • White, bone-like plates around the neck and body, plus ring-like structures on each leg. 318
  • Moves “like a black whirlwind” while running and can evade attacks with black-lightning-like speed. 105 135
  • As Mega Houndoom, his horns lengthen and curve upward, his front bones expand into armor-like structures, his tail splits, and dark purple hellfire-like energy coils around him. 664 757

Personality

Houndoom is exceptionally gentle toward vulnerable Pokémon despite the reputation of his species and his own difficult upbringing. His adoptive mother's dying wish—to retain his kindness rather than become cruel—became the principle guiding his life. He repeatedly helps others even when doing so brings punishment, danger, or scorn. 50 102 104

His defining flaw was extreme loyalty. Under Qing Mu, he blamed himself for his Trainer's abuse, regarded Qing Mu as his “light,” and could not initially accept that he had been abandoned. 104 107 Yan Yang's acceptance gradually allowed him to overcome this insecurity and find a new purpose: protecting Yan Yang. 125 126 127

After his reunion with Qing Mu, Houndoom became quieter, more mature, and less openly demanding of attention. He no longer competes with Yan Yang's other Pokémon for affection, believing that occasional acknowledgment from Yan Yang is enough. 318 He remains strongly protective, observant, and willing to intervene when he believes Yan Yang may be manipulated or endangered. 395 631 652
