Background / History
Armorouge was driven from its group to train alone after evolving, as was customary for its species. It became a natural loner who rejected companionship except for its younger sister, Skrelp. After leaving its group, it survived through constant conflict in the wild; it initially provoked battles for combat experience before Orbeetle persuaded it to focus on protecting weaker Pokémon instead. 138 192
Its protectiveness toward Skrelp was shaped by a poacher attack on Melemele Island. Armorouge was captured through carelessness and forced to watch the poachers abuse Skrelp, nearly killing her. After escaping, it ambushed and killed the poachers responsible. The incident left Skrelp fearful of others and made Armorouge deeply distrustful of humans. 277
Armorouge first encountered Yan Yang while rescuing a Queen Bee from poachers. It refused outside help during the battle, but Yan Yang respected that choice, healed the Queen Bee, and gifted Armorouge a cape previously worn by Houndoom. Armorouge accepted the gift and returned to check on Skrelp. 138 140
When Skrelp later vanished, Armorouge searched its territory and eventually entered the human city for clues, even blocking a road to draw attention. Its cooperation with Yan Yang during the Aether Paradise incident gradually became trust; it later accepted formal capture and became one of Yan Yang's Pokémon. 192 208 275
Despite already surpassing the usual level associated with evolution, Armorouge has repeatedly failed to evolve. Its mother, Kommo-o, believed it required a specific trigger rather than further levels alone. Armorouge rejected the offer to become clan leader, choosing instead to travel with Yan Yang. An evolution attempt failed during the Articuno conflict, and the Dragonblood Trial likewise did not produce a breakthrough. 266 277 407 771
Appearance
Armorouge is a large, heavily scaled Dragon/Fighting-type Pokémon with a powerful build suited to close combat. Its physical presence is imposing enough to intimidate unfamiliar Trainers, though it commonly wears Yan Yang's cape as part of its appearance. 140 531
- Massive scales provide its primary defense and are treated as marks of battle honor. 139 410
- Has a thick tail capable of smashing rocks and sweeping sparks from hard surfaces. 459 484
- Possesses powerful claws, a pointed snout, and vertical pupils. 277 484
- Wears a Soaring Cape, which moves naturally with its body and can be used for flight. 140 244
- Lost nearly all of its scales and one arm while fighting Articuno; its arm was later regenerated. 399 409 513
Personality
Armorouge is independent, proud, battle-focused, and highly protective of those it considers family. It does not attack children or defenseless opponents without reason, and it regards protecting Yan Yang from malicious people as a personal duty. 140 259 262
It is exceptionally diligent and values rank, honor, and victory. Much of its extreme training is motivated by a desire to retain its standing among Yan Yang's Pokémon, even when that means finding ways around limits on its training time. 326 459 465
Although normally reserved and serious, Armorouge is deeply affectionate toward Yan Yang. It considers him its most precious existence, becomes possessive of his attention, and has occasionally expressed a desire to take Yan Yang away somewhere with no other Pokémon. It ultimately yields when Yan Yang objects. 277 298 377
Armorouge is emotionally clumsy about that attachment. It initially feared Yan Yang would reject it for killing poachers, but Yan Yang's acceptance gave it confidence to speak openly about its feelings. 250 277
Abilities & Skills
Overlord Domain
Armorouge possesses a mutated Overlord Domain that manifests as a powerful aura covering the surrounding area. Its aura was strong enough to suppress Ultra Beasts and assist allied Pokémon against them. 244 326
- Raises all of Armorouge's stats by two stages when it enters battle. 244 377
- Raises the stats of recognized allies within the domain by one stage. 244 377
- Accelerates training and comprehension of Fighting- and Dragon-type moves outside battle. 244 377
- Prevents the abilities of Overlords and allies within the domain from being reduced by external factors. 262
- Its effects are subtle enough that opponents may not notice the enhancement immediately. 739
Combat Ability
Armorouge is a close-range fighter with exceptional battle awareness, speed bursts beyond ordinary expectations, and extensive experience against multiple opponents. It can assess attacks in motion, use its scales to absorb blows, and exploit openings for counters. 138 192 193
- Key moves include Dragon Claw, Roar, Bulk Up, Close Combat, Sky Uppercut, and Hidden Power (Fire). 244 377
- Used Roar to weaken poachers' Pokémon rather than simply drive them away. 138
- Defeated Ursaring with a single punch and later defeated Snorlax, Fat Sweetie, and Wailmer in Yan Yang's league final. 286 758
- Can use its scales as a shield, but sustained attacks can strip them away and expose vulnerable flesh beneath. 139 399
- Fairy-type attacks are especially dangerous; a Dazzling Gleam inflicted severe damage despite Armorouge's higher level. 758
Z-Moves and Fire Training
Armorouge can synchronize with Yan Yang through Z-Power. Together, they used the Dragon Z-Move Inferno Overdrive, producing a massive purple dragon construct that devastated the surrounding ground. 277
- Carries Kommo-o Z, intended to enable Clanging Scales after its evolution. 266 377
- Has trained Hidden Power (Fire) and attempted to combine it with Yan Yang's flames. 377 397
- Struggled to master Blast Burn, injuring itself during training. 395
- Discovered an unidentified Fire-type move, but could not sustain it. 380
Flight
Armorouge can fly using its Soaring Cape, a capability that surprised Yan Yang and other observers. 244
- The cape also allows it to avoid Ground-type restraints by taking to the air. 739
- Armorouge avoids relying on cape-assisted flight in some regulated battles because Yan Yang considers it potentially disallowed item use. 739
Training and Mentorship
Armorouge is an exacting instructor with a practical understanding of combat fundamentals. It trained Yan Yang in combinations, positioning, force generation, restraint escapes, and fighting techniques adapted for wilderness conditions. 300 301
- Gives other Pokémon structured training plans suited to their individual traits. 546
- Emphasizes self-discipline, awareness, and responsibility rather than constant supervision. 300
- Trained Pokémon on Mount Coronet in discipline and combat awareness, teaching weaker members to retreat rather than become burdens against overwhelming enemies. 696
- Its coaching, combined with Overlord Domain's training effect, significantly improved the Pokémon it supervised. 326 696
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soaring Cape — Gifted by Yan Yang after Armorouge rescued the Queen Bee; enables flight and is Armorouge's most treasured gift. It was damaged during the Articuno battle but was later repaired. 140 244 402 739
- Dragon Fang — Listed among its held items. 377
- Kommo-o Z — A Z-Crystal given through its mother for its future exclusive Z-Move after evolution. 266 377
- Dragon Z — Used with Yan Yang to perform Inferno Overdrive. 277
Relationships
- Yan Yang — Trainer, trusted partner, and Armorouge's most precious person. Their relationship developed from wary respect into complete trust, formal partnership, and mutual protectiveness. 140 250 275 377
- Skrelp — Younger sister. Armorouge's strongest familial attachment; it protected her from poachers, searched relentlessly when she disappeared, and worried over her congenital inability to evolve. 192 208 277
- Entei — Yan Yang's father figure, Armorouge's powerful senior, and a rival it hopes to surpass. Entei recognizes Armorouge's potential and approves of its determination. 262 380
- Kommo-o — Mother and clan leader. Armorouge understands her responsibilities but rejects her detached treatment of Skrelp and refuses to inherit leadership. 266 277
- Houndoom — Fellow member of Yan Yang's team. Houndoom's cape became Armorouge's first gift from Yan Yang, but Houndoom later grew suspicious of Armorouge's possessive behavior toward their Trainer. 140 395
- Silvally — Teammate and household rival. Silvally's evolution displaced Armorouge from second to third in the team's internal hierarchy after defeating it. 459 465
- Pyroar — Training partner and occasional target of Armorouge's schemes. Armorouge has pushed Pyroar through intense training and manipulated it to distract Houndoom. 326 394
- Rockruff — Yan Yang entrusted Rockruff to Armorouge's care during the Aether Paradise crisis. 229
