"Don't touch anything in here. Keep calm!" the Special Forces Leader barked.

The group searched their way forward, growing more and more horrified with every passing moment.

This was a biochemical research facility, and an utterly depraved one at that. Sadler had moved all the kinds of deranged research he couldn't conduct on the mainland to this private island, where he carried out inhumane secret experiments.

The arrogant US Soldiers were also getting a real eye-opener. At first, they had looked down on Kirk and the others, thinking they were just survivors hitching a ride. They had looked down even more on these bio-augmented people, assuming they were nothing more than fanatical militiamen. But after advancing only a hundred meters or so into the facility and fighting four or five skirmishes, many of the soldiers were already growing afraid.

These Zombies and bio-augmented people were unquestionably skilled fighters. They could hide anywhere and ambush the adventuring party in any way imaginable. Sometimes they dropped from the ceiling in large numbers; sometimes they hid behind cover and fired volleys; sometimes they pretended to be dead Experimental Subjects and launched surprise attacks. There were all sorts of tricks—more than even Middle Eastern terrorists could come up with.

Another fierce battle ended. The leader had been forced to shoot one of his men himself after the man mutated into a Zombie. When he counted their numbers, only fifteen remained. They had lost half their soldiers in just a thousand meters.

He had no choice but to ask for help from Kirk and the others, whom he'd looked down on. "Next time we fight, we'll work together."

Kirk didn't want Ashley's strength to be diminished either, so he nodded.
